Following is a summary of what was accomplished by various classes on Community Day which took place on Friday, September 23, 2011. Mrs. Haselby’s, Mrs. Genter’s, Mr. Thackery’s and Miss Todd’s classes: • We decorated brown paper bags with positive messages and pictures that will be used by the Kids Food Basket in Grand Rapids to send dinner home with students who otherwise might not have a healthy meal. • Some of the students made Halloween cards and sent them to the Haven of Rest in Williamston. • We made Safe Boxes for the middle school classrooms. These Safe Boxes will be used for anonymous tips from students to help notify incidents of concern regarding bullying. • We had 7th graders pair up with one or two 1st graders and teach them the fight song. Then, as a whole group we sang it together to the music. Mrs. Tringal’s class: • The high schoolers helped us cut and paint boxes to use to put books in for independent reading. They taught us to play some board games too. They also helped the kids clean and organize their desks. Finally, they made banners together to hang in the high school and at the game. • It was cute to see high schoolers chasing kids in a game of tag, climbing across the monkey bars, or holding a young kids hand and helping them with their lunch. • One girl as we were getting ready to leave today told me that this was the best day of her life. How sweet! Ms. Cross’ and Mrs. Ream’s classes: • Each high school student adopted a 2nd/3rd grader and we ate lunch with them, had two recesses and they worked hard at making Respectful, Responsible and Safe posters for expected behaviors for all the different areas in the elementary. They were FANTASTIC ‐ both high schoolers and elementary schoolers alike. Mrs. Toles’ class and the HS Leadership Class: • 2nd graders are learning about different kind of communities, urban, suburban and rural. We partnered a 2nd grader with a high school student and they took a piece of poster board, construction paper, markers and glue sticks and created a map to demonstrate one of the communities. It was amazing to see the teamwork and the finished products. They were all very proud of their hard work. It was awesome to see the High School students so excited about helping the 2nd graders. They were most excited about getting to take them to recess. One 10th grade student said "We don't get recess in High School anymore, this is awesome". It was a great experience for us all. Mrs. Gorrell’s and Mr. Beck’s classes: • We switched classes and they painted trash cans, made a Dansville Pennant, painted the sidewalks with sidewalk chalk to show Aggie spirit, and we also sang friend songs with Mrs. Wilson to improve our school community friendships. We ended the afternoon with a play session with our new friends. We all had a great time. Mr. Klingbiel’s and Mrs. Braman’s classes: • We washed fire trucks and cleaned and organized the fire barn. The students and teachers appreciated the opportunity to help out the people who help out so many others. Thank you volunteer firefighters! The trucks looked so awesome that they made it into the Homecoming Parade! A pleasant time was had by all. Ms. A. Rogers’ and Mrs. Rockwell's classes: • We read in high school and elementary partners. The first graders chose one first‐grade level book in addition to a more challenging book. • We played a math bingo game to help with our addition skills. • We enjoyed eating lunch and playing together at recess. • We created sketches for possible Community Day 2012 t‐shirts. • We cleaned Mrs. Rockwell's desks together. • Overall, both classes thoroughly enjoyed their day and plan to partner up for upcoming projects. Mrs. Voss and Mr. Nowiski’s class: • Students traveled to the cemetery south of Dansville to complete cleaning and maintenance projects. The cemetery is now managed by the township, but it is closed to new burials so there are very few operating funds available. The students trimmed bushes, pulled weeds, loaded brush, completed weed whacking, and learned some community history as well. Mrs. Galloway's class: • We beautified the grounds of the football stadium for homecoming. All students pulled weeds for approximately 45 minutes around the stadium and then we broke into teams. One team was in charge of painting the "D" in the middle of the football field. Another team was in charge of writing encouraging football messages all over the entrance with side walk chalk. Also, students put cups in the fence that spelled Go Aggies and Dansville Football. It was a great day and fun was had by all! Mrs. Rusch's class: • We weeded the Ladybug Garden at the Village Park, as well as weeded and picked up garbage around the village Playground • • • A small group of students (Nate York, Collin Lucken, Lantz Miller, Evy Lobdell, Meagan Kelley, Jared Powers) walked along S. Jackson St picking up garbage along the road. (Down to Dakin Road) "Cupped" the fence with the "Homecoming 2011" for decoration for the game Friday Night (Evy Lobdell, Meagan Kelly) Chalked the sidewalks of Fuller Field with player names and spirit phrases
