PAGE 10 THE POTTER COUNTY NEWS, GETTYSBURG, SOUTH DAKOTA THURSDAY, JANUARY 5, 2017 Wrestlers bring home championships and team honors from Salem tourney The weekend was a chance for the Potter County wrestlers to test themselves against the best in the state. Five of the top teams in South Dakota were in Salem, SD for the McCook / Central wrestling Invite on Saturday, Dec. 30. The Battlers hung with them and finished eighth in team points out of the 19 teams in attendance. Very few of the 16 man brackets had any byes included. Lucas Smith and Carl Cronin have both moved down a weight class in the last two weeks. Smith wrestled for the second time this year at 138 pounds and Cronin moved down to 113 pounds over the Christmas break. Both of them came home with championship medals and the brackets from their tournament weight classes. Brothers Joey (132 pounds) and Jesse Wheeler (152 pounds) won their finals matches to each place fifth. Joey learned to keep a cool head under pressure and watched as his opponent was penalized for unsportsmanlike conduct and Jesse received satisfaction by beating the opponent who sent him to the back side of the bracket earlier in the day. Alex Martinez at 170 pounds and Preston Worth at 195 pounds wrestled in the auxiliary gym most of the day, which was interesting when all the noise and cheering brought out a bat that circled in confusion for a few matches. They each finished the day in sixth. Chance Stuwe took another week off to rest his injury. 106 pounds Brayden Schlachter: fall to Jordan Rueb (BH / S); 0-10 decision to Parker Eldeen (PAR). 113 pounds Carl Cronin: win by pin in 1:09 over Izaak Reed (B/AH); win by pin in 3:15 over Braxton Trowbridge (CA N); 2-0 decision in OT over Wyatt Turnquist (WIN); 3-1 decision over Hayden Gilbertson (KC) to become champion. 132 pounds Joey W heeler: win by pin in 1:14 over Dimitri Davis (una); fall to Bryce Smart (MCM); win by pin in 0:24 over Logan Schlim (una); 4-2 decision over Paul Winker (HOW); 1-9 decision to Scott Peterson (CAN); 8-6 decision over Travis Leber (PAR) to place fifth. 138 pounds Lucas Smith: win by pin in 0:28 over Landan Debus (WIN); 13-6 decision over Isaac Feldhaus (HOW); win by pin in 0:57 over Zach Sykora (BH/S); win by technical fall in 5:28 over Dalton Bodewitz (MF) to become champion. 152 pounds Jesse Wheeler: win by pin in 1:57 over Tyler Eddy; fall to Vladik Johnson (BG); win by pin in 1:53 over Riley Hellmann (BH/S); 1-2 decision to Shaeden Scheidt (CAN); 3-1 decision over Vladik Johnson (BG) to place fifth. 160 pounds Jonathan Wheeler: fall to Dawson Hawkins (MCM); bye; fall to Kyle Lauback (CAN). 170 pounds Alex Martinez: win by pin in 1:28 over Jordan Ide (PAR); 2-11 decision to Aidyn Feldhaus (HOW); win by pin in 2:40 over Boston Morehart (PHIL); win by pin in 4:05 over Tanner Peterson (una); 0-10 decision to Kyle Seibel (CAN); fall to Sam Wente (DV) to place sixth. 195 pounds Preston Worth: win by forfeit; fall to Caleb Brandt (WW); win by pin in 3:35 over Mitchell Kistner (DV); win by pin in 0:47 over Lathan Norling (B/AH); fall to Jayden Schroeder (WIN); fall to Cade Fortuna (BG) to place sixth. 285 Drake Davis: fall to Geoffrey DeVries (PHIL); bye; fall to Adam Miller (CAN).
