Use the passage below to answer questions 3 & 4.
If the Tejas (Indians) asked for priests and desired baptism, the priests were to
remain there. And if the Tejas proved quite friendly and no danger was to be
expected at their hands, no large garrison was to be left behind; if, on the other
hand, they proved troublesome, as many soldiers should remain as seemed
needful, according to the advice and with the consent of Father Fray Damian
Manzanet. It was at no time necessary for the safety of the priests to leave soldiers
among the Tejas, for from the very first they welcomed us with so much affection
and good will, that they could hardly do enough to please us.

??
20 Which of these best completes the Venn
diagram?
F
Federalists
G Empresarios
…I am told, that my object was to separate Texas from
Mexico and deliver it to the United States of the north,
which is absolutely false and without the shadow of
foundation besides being a great absurdity. In a
moment of irritation I said to the vice President that if the
evils of Texas were not remedied the public there would
remedy them of themselves, this irritated him very much
and my difficulties commenced. The truth is I lost
patience and was imprudent and of course to blame, for
patience is necessary in such cases…
My conscience is at rest — as an agent I did my duty, or,
only erred from excess of zeal to do it — good has
resulted even from that error if it was one.

Fellow Citizens & compatriots—
I am besieged, by a thousand or more of the
Mexicans under Santa Anna — I have sustained a
continual Bombardment & cannonade for 24
hours & have not lost a man — The enemy has
demanded a surrender at discretion, otherwise,
the garrison are to be put to the sword, if the fort
is taken — I have answered the demand with a
cannon shot, & our flag still waves proudly from
the walls — I shall never surrender or retreat.
Then, I call on you in the name of Liberty, of
patriotism & everything dear to the American
character, to come to our aid, with all dispatch —
The enemy is receiving reinforcements daily &
will no doubt increase to three or four thousand
in four or five days. If this call is neglected, I am
determined to sustain myself as long as possible
& die like a soldier who never forgets what is due
to his own honor & that of his country — Victory
or Death.

General Antonio Lopez de Santa
Anna…overturned the constitution of his
country, now offers us the cruel
alternative, either to abandon our homes,
acquired by so many privations, or submit
to the most intolerable of all tyranny, the
combined despotism [absolute rule] of the
sword and the priesthood.
It incarcerated in a dungeon, for a long
time, one of our citizens, for no other
cause but a zealous endeavor to procure
the acceptance of our constitution, and
the establishment of a state government.
It has failed and refused to secure, on a
firm basis, the right of trial by jury, that
palladium of civil liberty, and only safe
guarantee for the life, liberty, and
property of the citizen.
It has failed to establish any public system
of education…
It has suffered the military commandants,
stationed among us, to exercise arbitrary
acts of oppression and tyranny, thus
trampling upon the most sacred rights of
the citizens, and rendering the military
superior to the civil power.
