St. Joan of Arc Church Lisle, Illinois Believing in Jesus Christ Throughout the Easter Season, all three of the Sunday readings are taken from the New Testament — the Christian scriptures. Together they explore what it means to believe in Jesus as the Christ, the One who fulfilled the prophecies of the Jewish scriptures. Today’s selections refer to our human weakness, yet they emphasize the forgiveness and peace that are available to those who put their faith in “Jesus Christ the righteous one” (1 John 2:2). In the Acts of the Apostles Peter invites everyone to “repent, therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be wiped away” (Acts 3:19). The First Letter of John calls Jesus Christ “expiation for our sins” (1 John 2:2). Finally, in the Gospel Jesus greets the disciples with “Peace” and urges them to preach “repentance, for the forgiveness of sins” (Luke 24:47). April 26, 2009 Third Sunday of Easter Page Two THIRD SUNDAY OF EASTER April 26, 2009 A Message From Our Pastor Dear Parishioners, I have always been grateful that Easter lasts an entire fifty days. Given the attention demanded by the liturgical details of Holy Week, as well as the intense focus required for the actual celebration of these Holy Week rites, I need the weeks after Easter Sunday to let the liturgies unfold and replay in my mind. This has always provided me with many hours of prayer and reflection. As I ponder the Holy Week liturgies we just celebrated at St. Joan of Arc, their beautiful moments as well a their glitches, I find that I gain new insights into the Paschal Mystery that is at the heart of our Christian faith. On Palm Sunday at St. Joan of Arc, we continued the practice of incorporating a palm procession at the 4:00 PM Mass but then added this procession to the 11:30 AM Mass also. The solemn movement from one station (in our case the school gym) to the church is intended to recall Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem before he died. Our processions, however, went a bit long and were somewhat chaotic. We’ll plan better for next year. There is nonetheless, something to be learned from the experience of ritual chaos and inconvenience as disconcerting as these may be. They can serve to jar us out of our ordinary expectations and routines. They can awaken us to the realization that the events we commemorate during Holy Week were indeed extraordinary and startling events in the history of the world. The Mass of the Lord’s Supper on Holy Thursday evening was redolent with powerful symbols and gestures, e.g., the joyful and prolonged ringing of bells that later were replaced by the stark sound of wooden clappers, the washing of feet, the reception of the three Holy Oils that touch our lives at critical moments such as baptism, sickness, and ordination, the collection of food for the poor, and the mystical candlelight procession with the Blessed Sacrament. This year, this procession was embellished with the piercing sound of the fire alarm activated, no doubt, by the clouds of perfumed prayer represented by the incense. Or was it the heat generated by the prayerful devotion of those who knelt in reverence and awe as the Bread of Angels passed their way? The Good Friday liturgy is always austere, and as such, invites a deep contemplative response. We do not mourn the death of Jesus because we know he is risen and will never die again. Instead, we devoutly recall Jesus’ wondrous love that led him to accept even death, death on the cross. This year at St. Joan of Arc we venerated a single crucifix in order to underscore the significance of one central symbol to which all of us bent our knees and touched our lips. From the presider’s chair where I sat, I was privileged to behold the most moving moments in the liturgy as one by one parishioners came forward and, without uttering a word, embraced the mystery of the cross as an undeniable reality in their lives. These were some of the people I saw: a young father with children whose wife is dying of cancer, a father who lost his job several months ago and is wondering how he will provide for his family in the months ahead, a young boy who knows his parents will be getting divorced, a woman struggling with an addiction to alcohol, many elderly people whose health continues to deteriorate bringing them ever closer to death, as well as a woman who knows her days are numbered but whose beautiful face glowed with resignation and hope as she shuffled to and from the cross. All I could believe as I watched this procession of “ordinary” people is that their fear, their brokenness and their pain was absorbed into the wood of that cross so that it could be united to the one sacrifice of Christ, and as such, be transformed into something the likes of which no mortal can imagine. Fr. Gabriel, O.S.B. To be continued next week... April 26, 2009 THIRD SUNDAY OF EASTER ‘In the Breaking of the Bread’ Today we celebrate the Third Sunday of Easter. The Easter joy we first experienced two weeks ago continues for 50 days, until we celebrate Pentecost. Our readings speak to us of knowing God, and keeping Him always before us. The beginning of the Gospel account today contains a brief reference to the story of the disciples on the road to Emmaus. Jesus drew near to them, but they failed to recognize him. Only when they had ‘broken bread’ together did they realize who he was. We recall the words we heard proclaimed on Holy Thursday, from St. Paul’s letter to the Corinthians: ‘For as often as you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the death of the Lord until he comes.’ Music Next Weekend May 2/3, 2009 — Fourth Sunday of Easter 8:30 AM Mass — Classical Choir 10:00 AM Mass — Contemporary Choir 11:30 AM Mass — JH/HS Musicians We wish to offer our sympathy and a promise of our prayers to: Family and Friends on the death of Page Three Take a S.T.E.P. to eliminate poverty What is S.T.E.P.?
