Current Event Writing Assignment
Despite what you might think, chemistry is important in your everyday life, and in many ways, has a
direct impact on you. Even though you might resist, it is important to understand and think about
how this area of science affects your life and our world. Throughout this course, we will spend time
reading and discussing current events dealing with chemistry.
The goal of this assignment is for you to find a CURRENT article that deals with chemistry in the real
world in some way. You will then write a response and reflection in regards to the article you found.
This assignment is worth 50 points. Specific requirements are listed below:





Article must be related to chemistry in some way and be current (less than two years old)
Summary and reflection should be 1-2 pages in length
Paper should be typed, double-spaced, using Times New Roman 12 pt. font with 1 in. margins
Copy of the article MUST be submitted with your paper
Plagiarism will result in a score of ZERO for the assignment
The following information should be included in your response:




Provide the article name, source, and a BRIEF (half a page or less) summary (10 points)
Reflect on the article and EXPLAIN your opinion, reaction, or how the issue affects you… Be
sure to incorporate facts from the article, ideas that we learned in class, and personal
experience in your response (25 points)
Proper grammar and no spelling errors (10 points)
Copy of the article (5 points)
In order to find a current event that is relevant and long enough, consider using scientific journals,
magazines, newspapers, and respected internet sites. Choosing an article that is not related to
chemistry or of decent length will result in loss of points! Check with me if you are unsure about a
specific article. LATE CURRENT EVENTS WILL LOSE 10 POINTS PER DAY!
You may submit the assignment via Google Docs, but be sure to provide a WORKING LINK to the
