Nunatsiavut Brass Band Workshop
Nain, Nunatsiavut (Labrador)
July 7-11, 2014
Open to Nunatsiavut beneficiaries from ages 12 to 80 interested in joining community brass bands or to
develop their musical skills. If you’re a current or former brass band member, someone who
participated in last year’s workshop, or with no experience at all, you are welcome to apply.
Workshop activities will include







Group instruction on the basics of playing brass instruments – no experience necessary
Daily practices of the music from the Labrador Moravian brass band tradition
Classes on music reading
Daily choir sessions
Special sessions on how to organize a brass band, how to maintain instruments
Recreational activities
A performance in the host community at workshop’s end
Last year’s facilitators, Terry Howlett, Stephen Ivany and Mark Turner, will be returning to lead the
workshop again this year.
The workshop can accommodate 25 participants. Places will be held for up to a minimum of 5
participants from each community that currently has a band ( Nain, Hopedale and Makkovik.
Participants from other communities are also welcome. Transportation costs from Nunatsiavut
communities and Upper Lake Melville, as well as an accommodation allowance of $70 per person per
day will be provided for all participants traveling from outside Nain. Assistance in locating
accommodation in Nain can be provided.
