OVERVIEW
The elderly are the fastest growing populace in the nation. The face of the graying
population has changed over the past decade. The once considered frail elderly patients in your dental hygiene practice have changed to vibrant independent living
individuals. These changes pose new issues for the dental hygienist to consider
when treating the geriatric patient. The number of individuals who are victims of
elder abuse has reached epidemic proportions. It is estimated that between 700,000
and 2.5 million elderly individuals are abused annually. Texas dental hygienists are
not prepared to recognize and report elder abuse. This course will raise awareness
in the dental office of elder abuse. It will provide knowledge for the dental hygienist
to overcome the reluctance to become involved in their elder patients’ lives. The
dental hygienist will have the knowledge to detect elder abuse and provide
information about agencies and organizations that can aid in halting the abuse.
Becoming aware of and actively involved in treating elderly patients who may be
abused is to care for the whole patient.
