WellingtonisthehomeoftheRoyalNewZealandBallet,theNewZealandSchoolofDanceand
numerousotherprofessionaldancecompanies.AlargepercentageofMarsdenstudentstakedance
classesoutsideofschoolandthisyeartherewillbeoptionsavailablewithinschoolaswell.
Marsdenoffersstudentstheopportunitytopartakeindanceteams,focusingprimarilyon
HipHop.EarlyinTerm3,theseteamsmaychoosetoentertheregionalAerobicsandHipHopdance
competitionheldinWellington.
StudentsinYears7Ͳ13wantingtodanceforfunorfitnessmaybepartofasocialteam,coachedbya
seniorstudent.Opportunitiesforperformancewillbeavailable.Dependingonnumbers,students
maybeputintovariousteamsandauditionswillbeheldifrequired.
Moreseriousdancerswishingtoentertheregionalcompetitionmaybecoachedbyaseniorstudent
oranexternalcoach,dependingonavailability.Inthisinstance,dancerswillbeauditionedduring
theyearandplacedinteamsaccordingtoability.Rehearsalswillbeagreedinconsultationwiththe
dancersandcoach.Costswillvaryandwillbecommunicatedupontheengagementofthecoach.In
previousyears,thecosthasbeenapproximately$250,whichincludespractices,entrytothe
competitionandcostumes.
Iftheteamwinstheregionalcompetition,theyhavetheoptionofattendingtheNational
Championships.Costsinvolvedmayincludeflightsandaccommodation,dependingonthelocation
oftheevent.

DebatinghasbeenatraditionatMarsdenforalongtimeandwehavehadtwoseniorstudentsin
theNewZealandteamattheWorldDebatingChampionshipsinthelastsevenyears.
Marsdenoffersanumberofdebatingteams:

debates.Iftheteamcannotmakethedategiven,thentheteamdefaultstotheopposition.An
alternativedatewillnotbearranged.
Seniorteamsusuallydebateintheevening,adjudicatedbyuniversitystudents.Studentswillneedto
arrangetheirowntransport.
JuniorteamswilldebatebothatMarsdenandatothervenuesandtransportwillbearranged
accordingly.
Tocoverthecostsofregistrationfees,alldebatingstudentswillbecharged$20eachfortheyear.
Debatingteamswillbecoachedbystaffmembers,parentsorseniorstudents.Pleasenotethatwe

Sincethe1990s,MarsdenhasbeeninvolvedinthisannualShakespeareanFestivalheldin
Wellington.Studentshavetheoptiontoperforminapiecedirectedbyanadult(duration15
minutes)ortoperformtheirownstudentdirectedpiece(duration5minutes).Piecesmaybe
adaptedinanywaythestudentsseefit,butmustretaintheoriginallanguageoftheplay.
ThecompetitionusuallytakesplacetowardstheendofTerm1,withtopperformersfromthe
regionaleventsheadingtoaNationalFestivallaterintheyear.
In2014,seniorstudentswhowouldliketoeitherdirectashortpieceorauditionforoneonoffer
shouldsignupontheCulturalNoticeboardearlyinTerm1.

Everysecondyear,Marsdenstagesamusicalproduction.ThisisusuallyopentoYears10Ͳ13,
howeverthiscanbeadapteddependingonthechosenshow.Marsdenhasafinetraditionwiththe
qualityofitsmusicalproductions.RecentshowsincludeWestSideStory,Grease,TheSoundof
Music,TheBoyFriendandAnnie.
Studentsareselectedthroughacting,singinganddancingauditions,usuallyheldearlyinTerm1.
Externaldirectors,choreographersandmusicaldirectorswithconsiderabletheatreexperienceare
employedtoassiststaffinthecreationoftheshow.BoysfromWellingtonCollege,ScotsCollegeand
StPatrick’sCollegehavejoinedourcastsinpreviousyears.Whereverpossible,weusestudentsto
formthebandororchestraandourbackstage,hairandmakeup,lightingandFrontofHouseteams
areallmadeupofMarsdenstudents.
RehearsalsareheldonMondayafternoons,Thursdayafternoons,andSundaysinTerm2
Studentsinvolvedwillbeissuedwithacommitmentletterandarehearsalscheduleandmustensure
thattheyareavailableforallrehearsalswhentheyaudition.

EarlyinTerm3MarsdenholdstheSwainsonMemorialMusicCompetition,awonderfulevening
showcasingthemusicaltalentsofourstudents.Theprizeisawardedeachyearinmemoryof
FrancesBettySwainson,aformerpupil(1922Ͳ1926)whodiedinMarch1974.Theprizewas
endowedtomarktheSchool'scentenaryin1978andisawardedforexcellenceinmusicalpublic
performanceonanyinstrumentorvoice.Thispopularcompetitionisheldinconjunctionwiththe
NellClereScholarshipandtheprizeisawardedatPrizeGiving.TheNellClereScholarshipisa
monetaryawardtoallowtherecipientinYears7Ͳ12tocontinuehermusictuition.Audience
membersarewelcomeattheconcert.
ApplicationformswillbemadeavailableinTerm2andareduetoMissWilsonbyFriday27June.
TheComposerinResidenceProgramme
TheComposerinResidenceProgrammewasintroducedin2003.Theresidencyisforfiveweeksand
duringthistimethechosencomposerspendstimementoringseniormusicstudents,givingan
addressinassemblyandcomposingapieceofmusicfortheschool.
ItinerantTeachers
TheSchoolemploysanumberofitinerantmusicteachers,mostofwhomplayregularlyin
professionalWellingtonmusicgroups.Studentswishingtotakeamusiclessonshouldcompletethe
formattheendofthisbookletandreturnittoMrsCampbell.
LessontimetablesarepostedinadvanceontheMusicNoticeboardandtakeplaceduringtheschool
day.Allstudentsareexpectedtoconsultthetimetablesregularly.Studentsareexpectedtotakepart
ingroupactivitiessuggestedbytheDirectorofMusicortheirtutors.
Eachtermthereisaninformaleveningconcertfortheitineranttutorstoshowcasetheirstudents.In

Eachyeartherearevariousmusicalcompetitionsonofferandstudentsareencouragedtoenter.See
therelevantitinerantteacherforfurtherinformation.

StudentHeadofStageChallenge:[email protected]
ThisexcitingeventalternateswiththemajormusicalproductionandtakesplaceinTerm2every
secondyear.Ledbyateamofseniorstudents,thisdanceextravaganzainvolvesupto100dancers
and40studentsbehindthescenes.
Thestudentproductionteamcreatesan8minutedancepiece,portrayingathemetheyhave
chosen.Theychoreographtheroutines,createthecostumesandset,designthehairandmakeup
andruntherehearsals.Staffmembersgiveguidancetotheproductionteam.
StudentsfromYears7Ͳ13areeligibletoauditionearlyinTerm1,withballet,jazz,hiphopand
effectivemovementthedancestylesmostcommonlyusedintheproduction.
RehearsalsareusuallyThursdaysandSundaysinTerm1and2,withaperformanceinMayorJune.

workshops,runatschoolbyWellingtonbasedlightingcompanyMJFLighting.Theywilllearnhowto
planandrigalightingdesignandlearntousethelightingboard.Placesarelimitedonthiscourse.
Studentstrainedinthelightingsystemcanthenformthelightingcrewforschoolproductions,the
annualFashionParade,StageChallenge,specialassemblies,andothereventsasrequired.
ThenextworkshopisplannedforTerm2,2015.

Seniorstudentswithaninterestincostuming,setdesignandstagemanagementareencouragedto
signupforStageChallenge,wheretheycanleadateamoftheirpeersanddeveloptheirown
creativeideastosupportthechoreographyofthechosentheme.
