BreakthroughGreaterBoston(BTGB)isasuccessfulcollegeaccessandteachertrainingprogram.BTGB
offerssixyearsofacademicenrichmentandcollegepreparationtomiddleschoolandhighschool
studentswithhighpotentialbutlimitedopportunities.Simultaneously,BTGBrecruits,trains,and
inspiresadiversecohortofhighachievingcollegestudentstobecomethenextgenerationofurban
teachers.UsingaStudentsTeachingStudentsmodel,BTGBprovidesengaging,tuition-freeacademic
programmingduringthesummerandafterschool.Ourstudentsgaintheskillsandmotivationto
succeedinrigoroushighschoolcoursesand,ultimately,incollege.Meanwhile,ourteachersgainhandsonexperience,research-basedtraining,andcoachingfromprofessionaleducators.
Overthepastsixyears,97%ofourgraduatingstudentshavematriculatedtofour-yearcolleges,and
82%ofthemhavepersistedthroughtheirundergraduateyears.Onaverage,morethan75%ofour
graduatingteachershavegoneontopursuecareersineducation.Aftertwodecadesofsuccessatour
originalCambridgecampus,BTGBembarkeduponasignificantprogramexpansionandopenedasecond
campusinDorchesterinthesummerof2013.
SUMMARY
Aspartofourschoolyearprogram,BreakthroughGreaterBostonoperatesanacademicmentoring
programforitsmiddleschoolandhighschoolstudents.AcademicMentors(AMs)supportstudentswho
needadditionalassistancewithclassworkandhomeworkthroughouttheschoolyearwhileproviding
mentorshiptostudentsbyofferingguidancearoundnon-cognitiveskillssuchasstudyskills,
organization,andself-advocacy.Academicmentoringsessionswillconsistoftutoringincoreacademic
subjectsidentifiedbyBreakthroughstaffaswellascoachingaroundeffectivestudyhabitsand
strategies.Ateachcampus,AMsreportdirectlytotheAcademicMentorCoordinatorandDirectorof
StudentServices.
RESPONSIBILITIES
• Schedulingandcommittingtoweeklyacademicmentoringsessionwithassignedstudent;
sessionsgenerallyoccurweekdaysintheafternoons/earlyeveningsoronweekends
• Communicatinganyconcernstoyoursupervisors
• Completingweeklyacademicmentoringlogtomaintaincommunicationwithyoursupervisors
andrecordbothstudentprogressandstudentconcerns

LOGISTICS
ThetwoBreakthroughGreaterBostoncampusesarelocatedattheCambridgeRindgeandLatinSchool
andTechBostonAcademyinDorchester(bothaccessiblebypublictransportation).AMswillmeet
studentseitheronsiteoratadesignatedlocallibrary.AMsmustcommittoatleastone60-minute
academicmentoringsessionperweekforanentiresemester(October-DecemberorFebruary-May).
Additionally,AMsmustattendonethree-hourtrainingsession.Academicmentoringscheduleswill
followtheBostonPublicSchoolsandCambridgePublicSchoolscalendarsandhonorallholidaysand
vacationdays.
