Topographic Map Extra Practice

Topographic Map Extra Practice: KEY
Directions: Match the topographic map on the left with the correct landform on the
right. Put the correct letter of the landform on the line to the left of the map.
B
E
D
C
F
A
7. What is the major landform shown on the topographic map
above?
A River
B Hill
C Plain
D Lake
Figure 1.1
8. What is the elevation of the star
your answer.
on top of the hill in the figure 1.1 map? Explain
Elevation = Between 701-719 meters; because the star is not on the 700 m contour line
and there is not another contour line inside the 700m mark and therefore cannot be 720 m.
9. What is the elevation of the star
Explain your answer.
that is not on top of the hill in the figure 1.1 map?
Elevation = 600 meters; since the star is located on the contour line we know its EXACT
elevation. The star is located on an index contour so it states the elevation and no
calculation is necessary.
10. Using figure 1.1, if you move 3 centimeters on the map, how far would you have moved
in real life?
Show your work.
Distance = 3 Kilometers; since each centimeter represents 1 kilometer 3 centimeters would
be 3 kilometers.
3 cm x 1 km/cm = 3 km total
11. What is the contour interval of the map? How did you find it?
20 Meters; it is the change in elevation between each contour line.
100 meters between index contours / 5 contours = 20m in between each line
12. On the figure 1.1 map color the contour index lines that you used to figure out the
contour interval RED.
13. Shade in the areas you see where water shed would occur in BLUE…if you don’t
remember what water shed is from 7th grade you may have to look it up 
Arrows represent watershed and the arrow points in the direction of the water flow.
14. How are the contour lines around the hilltop in figure 1.1 going to be affected if
weathering and erosion was to take place over the next 100 years?
The hilltop or peak would become more flat on top and the sides around the mountain
would become less steep as particles would erode from the top of the mountain downhill
and build along bottom of the mountain creating a gentle slope
15. Which of the following is the most reasonable topographic map of the area shown in the
picture?
16. Some students use this map to plan a hike from a road to a creek in an unfamiliar area.
Which of these additional pieces of information would most help the students plan their
hike?
A The scale used on the map
B The type of bedrock in the area
C The length of the creek on the map
D The location of the nearest large city
