2011 - Memorial Blood Centers

2011
ANNUAL REPORT TO THE COMMUNITY
Dear colleagues
and supporters
Thanks to all who partner with us—as blood
donors, blood drive sponsors, financial
contributors, and volunteers—this past
year we made a real difference in the lives
of as many as 400,000 of our friends,
neighbors, family members, and others
living in the communities we serve!
THOMAS BECKER, M.D., BOARD CHAIR AND
Every day, we hear stories of courage
and survival that demonstrate the impact
donated blood has on the lives of others.
And every one of those stories reminds us
again and again how life can change in an
instant. From natural disasters to emergency
procedures and life-long battles with chronic
diseases such as cancer, a stable and safe
blood supply is essential to ensuring the
health and well-being of our community.
When every two seconds someone needs
blood, engaging everyone in saving and
sustaining lives is our mission. Throughout our
2010-2011 fiscal year, you were there with us
every step of the way. And we are extremely
grateful for your support and your continuing
belief in the work we do. Thank you.
DONALD C. BERGLUND, CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER

A 60-year legacy of
commitment to the community
Among Minnesota’s oldest
and largest communitybased non-profit blood
centers, Memorial Blood
Centers has been saving
and sustaining lives for over
60 years. Firmly rooted in the
communities we serve, we currently supply over
30 area hospitals and other partners throughout
the U.S. with a safe and stable blood supply.
Through effective outreach to donors, continual
development of biomedical expertise, and
collaborative partnerships with blood drive
sponsors, health care facilities, and global
medical providers, we connect those who
need blood with the generous volunteers
who give, and deliver the highest level of
technical expertise and laboratory testing
services to customers around the world.
HUBERT H. HUMPHREY, FORMER VICE-PRESIDENT OF THE
UNITED STATES AND MAYOR OF MINNEAPOLIS IN 1948,
WAS AMONG THE FIRST TO DONATE A PINT OF BLOOD.
MBC MISSION : TO HELP SAVE LIVES BY PROVIDING BLOOD AND BIOMEDICAL SERVICES
A community
of volunteers
Hundreds of thousands of people are alive
today because community partners and
financial contributors, blood donors and
recipients, volunteers and blood drive sponsors
joined together to advance our mission to
help save lives through blood donation.
THANKS TO THE MINNESOTA VIKINGS AND PLAYER

Making
a difference
An estimated 200,000 Minnesotans are
living with a history of cancer. For many who
have undergone years of treatment, only a
transfusion of specially matched platelets can
provide the life-saving help they need to survive.
Now, thanks to the Fred C. and Katherine
B. Andersen Foundation, we are making an
even greater difference in the lives of patients
facing an ongoing battle with this disease.

Thanks to thousands of financial

service, expanding our capacity
to serve more blood donors,
collect as many as 8,000 more
units in its first year of operation
and, most importantly, help save
as many as 24,000 more lives.

each week to meet demand. And while
blood donations collected at MBC’s
11 donor centers help contribute to the
supply, blood drive sponsors play an even
more critical role hosting hundreds of
blood drives each month that empower
others to be life-saving heroes. Among our
many business and community partners,
