Grade 4 and Grade 5 Gifted Program classes, and a Primary Behaviour Class are also
housed at our school.
We are a "Toronto Schools on the Move" school and actively promote a healthy
lifestyle.
A nutritious morning snack is provided daily to all of our students.
Naturalization areas, located in the schoolyard and inner courtyard, are used as outdoor
science classrooms and alternative play spaces.
Before and After School Programs provide an extended day for some of our students.

Information about the
success of our programs
comes from a wide variety
of student assessments.
These assessments are
based on clear
expectations for all
learners, consistent with
those described in The
Ontario Curriculum.
The primary purpose of student assessment is to improve learning.
Assessment has the greatest potential to improve learning when it is an
integral part of classroom activities. Teachers assess student progress
towards achieving the expectations on an ongoing basis by using
strategies such as projects, class presentations, homework assignments,
classroom observations, portfolios of student work, and tests.
Schools use assessment information and information from other sources
to make informed decisions for school improvement planning. Schools
identify areas of strength as well as areas that require improvement. Input
is obtained from a variety of sources such as student assessments,
teacher feedback, parent feedback, and community surveys. In this way,
schools monitor, celebrate and improve their efforts in providing a
supportive and challenging learning environment for all their students.

At Broadacres we foster a strong home-school connection through our weekly school newsletter ("What's Up
Broadacres?"), use of Student Planners in Grades 1 to 5, and regular informal communication.
We encourage parent involvement through volunteer opportunities in the classroom, on excursions, and at
special events such as "Jump Rope for Heart" and Play Day
A strong and active School Council meets regularly to discuss and provide input on issues which affect our
students and our school. Fundraising activities, including an annual September barbeque, monthly Pizza
Lunches and Treat Days, and raffles have been very successful. Funds raised have been used to sponsor
our annual Skating Days during winter months, and our "Grade 5 Farewell" each June, and have purchased
new Orff instruments, and choir risers for presentations and concerts.
Broadacres is involved in the Learning Partnership's "Welcome to Kindergarten" program, an orientation
program for our future Kindergarten students and their parents, to help prepare them for entering school.
Our new Snack Program is coordinated by one of our parents and could not continue without parent, family
and community volunteers.

Our annual "Spirit of Giving" Project supports our local food bank, "The Food Basket" at St. James Church.
Our teachers provide mentorship to Faculty of Education students from The University of Ontario Institute of
Technology (UOIT), and Nipissing and Lakehead Universities, Child and Youth Care (CYW) students from
George Brown and Humber Colleges, and high school Co-op students from Silverthorn Collegiate.
Recent fundraising efforts have supported the purchase of wells for needy villages in India.
Our new Snack Program benefits from funding through the Toronto Foundation for Student Success and the
Ontario Government.
A nursing student from Humber College/The University of New Brunswick will be doing a practicum
placement at our school during the 2009/10 school year in support of our nutrition initiative.
