TRAILS AND INFORMATION ABOUT THE AREA
The trails we will use include Forest Service roads and technical, single track trails that have been used by hunters, miners, and packers since the 1800's. Some were used by native populations long before that. This area was the last hold out of those natives and was one of the last mapped regions in Ca. You will be riding over and on a small part of the South Fork Mountain ridge, which is the longest,
continuous ridge in North America! The 55 mile ride are VERY doable for a fit experienced endurance
horse, and the 35s are doable for moderately fit horse, but is not a flat and easy ride. There will be plenty of flat spots on the ridge and along the river to make time, but take it easy going up to the ridge. The South Fork Recreation Trail winds along and above the South Fork of the Trinity River and
has a few narrow spots and a bridge crossing over the South Fork of the Trinity River, though it will be halfway through the ride before you get there, so no worries if you have a horse that just needs to blow off a little steam first. You will go 4 miles up to the top of the ridge, first thing in the morning. Being a mix of Forest Service gravel and dirt roads and single track trail, the footing ranges from soft dirt to gravel. Hoof protection of some kind is recommended. Carrying emergency hoof boots for shod horses is also recommended. This is not a ride where the trails are perfectly groomed and you are minutes from help. We love the rugged beauty of this back country, but you have to always have respect for it. We will have a treatment vet on had but should your horse need hospitalization, the closest vet hospital is 2+ hrs to the coast, or 3+ hrs to the valley. You are responsible for you and your horse. We will provide great place for you to ride and ask that you respect the terrain, your horse, and your fellow riders, and we will all have a most excellent weekend in some of California's most stunning and historical country! You can see photos and videos of the area, the trails, and get updates at our Facebook event page https://www.facebook.com/events/1517389931839015/
and also the Shasta Trinity Endurance FB Page, https://www.facebook.com/shastatrinityaercendurance
CAMP AND AREA SERVICES
We will be camping at the Ruth Rodeo Grounds. There is plenty of room, even for bigger rigs. Nearby in Ruth just a few miles from the rodeo grounds there is a small grocery store/gas station (gas and diesel) and a bar. There is also a grocery/hardware store and gas station (with diesel) in Dinsmore ( 22
miles ). There is a post office, bar, burger joint, and butcher shop in Mad River (between Ruth and Dinsmore). To be safe you should top off the tank on the coast in Fortuna (or Hydesville, 3 miles up 36), or Red Bluff in the Valley, before you head out Hwy 36. There are local fire and emergency rescue services, and a small medical facility for basic things, but the nearest hospital is in Fortuna, 2+ hours away.
DIRECTIONS:
From the Coast/Hwy 101:
Head to Fortuna on Hwy 101. Just past Fortuna (if coming from the North), or Just before Fortuna (if coming from the South) is the Hwy 36turnoff. Drive East through Hydsville, Carlotta, Bridgeville and Dinsmore. You'll go through the valley, then pass the Forest Service on the left and head up the hill. Go down the hill and you'll go through Mad River (a post office, bar, burger joint, and butcher, all in one spot, and if you blink you will miss it!). Cross over the bridge, and 1/2 mile after Mad River you take a right turn On Mad River Road towards Ruth / Ruth Lake. Follow Mad River Road aprox. 17 miles, and take a sharp right turn, at the end of the road and go .2 more miles turn left onto Ruth Zenia Road for .4 mi continue onto Holly Road for .2 miles then on the Right is Rodeo Way and the Ruth Rodeo Grounds...Use Rodeo Way, Zenia CA 95552 for map apps. We will have lots of flags and signs out. From the Central Valley/I5: Head to Red Bluff on I5 and head west on Hwy 36. Past Platina, Wildwood and Forest Glen, and over South Fork Mountain until you reach the turnoff, Mad River Road, towards Ruth / Ruth Lake ( you leave Hwy 36 ). Turn left here, and follow description above from Mad River Road.

When out on the trail if asked by another trail user for trail, yield it at best opportunity. Do not block trail. If you want to pass, ask for trail (DO NOT TAILGATE!) and pass quietly and calmly. Do not run by without letting a fellow rider or
a public trail user unassociated with our event know you are passing. If you see a rider (or other trail user) ahead, slow down to a slow jog or walk. When at water trough do not barge into a trough without asking the rider already using it if it is ok, also do not run off and leave a horse that is drinking without asking the rider if it is ok.
