Section 8.5: Rational Zero Theorem
Date____
Rational Zero Theorem:
Given a polynomial function in descending order, let q be the factors of the
first term and, p be the factors of the constant (last) term, then p/q is a
rational number that is a possible zero of the function.
Examples:
1.
List all possible rational zeros for each function and state
whether they are positive or negative.
a. h(x) = 3x4 - 2x3 - 5
b. g(x) = 2x3 - 5x2 + 3x - 8
3. Find all zeros of g(x) = x3 - 4x2 - 2x + 20
Guess and check could take
FOREVER!!!! Any IDEAS????
2.
The volume of a rectangular solid is 60 cubic inches. The
height is 3 inches less than the width, and the length is 1
inch longer than the width. Find the dimensions of the solid.
