Topics 2-6 Content Focus
Topics 2-6 focus on deep understanding of whole-number and decimal operations. Students use the standard
multiplication algorithm to fluently multiply multi-digit numbers. They use models and strategies, including standard
algorithms, to divide with 2-digit numbers divisors and to perform all four operations on decimals through hundredths.
In Topic 5, students use patterns to divide by multiples of 10, and students estimate quotients. Students use area
models, partial quotients, and the relationship between multiplication and division to find quotients of multi-digit whole
numbers. This work leads to use of the standard algorithm for dividing multi-digit whole numbers.

Program Materials
To fully develop the mathematical concepts in this unit, the suggested pacing has been extended. This extended time
period includes assessments, which can be used as evidence for the district Standards-Based Report Card. The
components of each lesson support the daily use of the MPS instructional design (LESA) with multiple opportunities to
explore and summarize.
The components of each lesson are outlined below, with recommendations for teachers to support meaningful learning
for students and maximize instructional time. As always, teachers should make instructional decisions based on
students’ needs and professional judgement.

Assessments:
There are multiple assessment options for each topic; these are available in the Student’s Edition, the Assessment Sourcebook, and/or as an Online
Assessment. Teachers can choose which to use (or use more than one to vary assessments, minimize student copying, and/or provide retake
opportunities). See Teacher’s Edition Program Overview p. 73 for details.
