n PROGR AM OVERVIEW
Pre-K Pizza Palace is a week-long
interactive study focusing on four areas
of the curriculum: Emergent Reading,
Emergent Writing, Mathematical
Thinking and Social Studies. The unit
was taught in an 8 X 8 Pre-K inclusion
classroom that contains 8 ESE students
and 4 School Readiness and 4 Voluntary
Pre-K students ages 3-5.
Our study of the letter P began
with a field trip to a police station, post
office, park and the pizza parlor where
the students made and ate their own
pizzas. The rest of the week we set up
our classroom as a pizza parlor. Each
day was initiated by a new story about
pizza then the students could choose
the roles of: chef, waitress, deliveryman,
customer, take-out operator, dishwasher,
and cashier or change roles daily. They
were able to take an order by phone
or at the table with a form that had
words and symbols. Then they could
prepare the order by sequence, serve
or deliver and take payment. They could
act as customers role play societal
opportunities They were also able to use
the wheeled vehicle to deliver or to go
through the drive-thru.
skills lesson gave family involvement
and broadened the student’s perspective
of community. This study gave them
the opportunity to increase fine motor
skills by writing and manipulating the
pizza ingredients. The wheeled vehicle
addressed their gross motor skills,
while emergent reading and writing
skills were increased through the order
taking. Math skills were addressed in the
sequencing, patterning and number and
money recognition and matching.
Our class completed most of these
activities as a whole group with small
group instruction demonstrating the
order form and customer check and
money recognition phases.
We e x t e n d e d t h i s s t u d y b y
encouraging participation in Pizza Hut’s
Book-it program that rewards the student
with a personal pan pizza for a month of
reading nightly at home.
This program can easily be adapted
for higher grade levels with focus
on money calculations, Career Day
emphasis as well as advanced reading
and writing skills.
