W
ith each new spring,
the world experiences
the beginning of a new life
as nature unfolds her majesty
around us. The dogwoods have
bloomed and soon the day
lilies here at Historic Church
will be smiling at us with their
bright golden and orange faces.
Each spring also brings
a new visitor season for the
Foundation and a renewed
team of volunteers, board
members and officers – and
this year a new Executive
Director. For me, it is a time of
gratitude and appreciation for
what the Foundation family
has accomplished and anticipation for what the future holds.
My tenure as foundation
president has flown by, filled
with challenges and great
joys. My goals for these years
were not self-chosen; rather
they were needs that were
of time and place and abun-
dantly clear. First, when the
dust settled after the recession, it became very clear
that we needed to increase
annual giving sufficiently to
reduce the annual draw on the
endowment income as part of
the operating budget. Second,
the 2012 Condition Survey
made the replacement of the
1897 Buckingham slate roof
the number one preservation
priority. Planning and funding
were begun in 2013 and the
work began in 2014.
Both of these goals have
required enormous effort especially on the part of our staff.
Executive Director Camille
Bennett and our annual
giving chair, Ronnie Gerster,
conducted an amazing annual
giving campaign that, with
the faithful and generous help
of all our members, raised
the amount of such funds
significantly beyond previous
years. Camille and Education Director and Curator
Robert Teagle have worked
tirelessly to secure grants for a
majority of the funds needed
for the roof project. Donor
and Board gifts accomplished
the remainder. Camille and
Robert, finance director Mr.
Douglas Walker, and preservation chair Tony Waring have
overseen the project, with
tremendous success. In total,
approximately $489,000 was
raised in 2014. My gratitude
for these efforts is without
measure, especially since I only
needed to be the chief cheerleader!
New and traditional activities flourished at Historic
Christ Church this year.
The addition of the “Raise
the Roof ” Craft Beer and
Barbeque event was so
successful that we will do it
again in July, 2015 and hope
that it will become an annual
event. The Robert Carter, III
Manumission Commemoration and The Holly and The
Ivy Carol Sing were heavily
attended with the special
participation of our partners, the Mary Ball Washington Museum & Library,
the Northern Neck of Virginia
Historical Society, The Chesapeake Chorale, the Christchurch School Choir, and the
Sharon Baptist Youth Choir.

TRANSITIONS Continued from page 1
These activities, indeed all activities, happen because of the talent and
dedication of so many people. I would
be remiss to not specifically thank each
staff member for his or her incredible
generosity of time, talent and energy.
And, of course, our wonderful volunteers!! I cannot express how much each
of you has meant to me.
So while we look back at what has
been accomplished, we must ready
ourselves for what is to come. Just as
spring brings us a transition in nature
and we prepare for our new season
at Historic Christ Church, we must
prepare for other changes. That brings
me to the most difficult of my duties
as your president. When Mrs. Bennett
announced her intention to retire, I
agreed to chair the search committee
to find the next Executive Director. In
the past two years, I have come to know
Camille as a woman of enormous intellect, courage and the wondrous ability
to steer a right and calm course in times
of difficulty. She has made my tenure as
President rewarding and fulfilling and
I am grateful beyond measure for her
leadership and friendship.
Finding the appropriate candidate as
our new Executive Director could only
be possible with the help of a fabulous team: John Bowden, John Hunt,
Robert Cornelius, Anne Dickerson,
Mary Hoerneman, Tony Waring and
David May. As a team, we are delighted
to welcome Clare Adams as the fourth
Executive Director of the Foundation
for Historic Christ Church and look
forward to her leadership in the years to
come.
Finally, we will welcome John
Bowden as the new Foundation President. John has served as my VicePresident for two years and as Volunteer Council Chairperson for two and
one-half years. He will bring enormous
energy and skill to this position and will
be a terrific President.
There is much ahead for all of us.
Please join me in welcoming Clare
and John in their new positions. Please
continue making the future of Historic
Christ Church as bright as its past.
Bonnie P. Dawson

My Favorite Years
I
Bonnie Dawson and Camille Bennett cut the
cake to celebrate the 350th birthday of Robert
“King” Carter in 2013.
n 1999, when Virginia’s Northern
Neck became my home, the late
Madeline Hooper, a family friend,
said I might enjoy being a docent at
Historic Christ Church. I said yes,
and so began my favorite years. People
wanted help in more areas, and I kept
saying yes. By 2005, I knew the financial needs of the foundation were real,
so when asked to be its Director of
Development, I said yes. The goals:
increase annual giving of $77,000 by
60% and raise $1.5 million in capital.
Work no sooner began than came the
request to succeed Robert A. Cornelius as the foundation’s third Executive Director in 2007. The new job
added the overarching goal: fulfill the
foundation’s mission for today and
for the future. To do that, the foundation knew it needed to break down a
wall of perceived exclusivity, raise the
profile of the historic site out of the
woods, and reach and engage an everwidening circle of friends. Looking at
the giant footprints of my two predecessors with some trepidation, I again said
yes, primarily because of the wonderful
people I knew would be helping at
every step.
The four foundation Presidents
under whom I’ve been privileged to
serve, John Hunt, Hugh White, Tony
Waring, and Bonnie Dawson, and
incoming President John Bowden, are
unique in their experience, talents and
styles, but share an exceptional dedication and ability to lead. They and
the many board members who work
so diligently in all areas of foundation
activity have filled my journey with
wisdom, good humor and inspiration.
I’m humbled by the multi-talented and
hard-working Trish Geeson, Robert
Teagle and Doug Walker who carved
their own niches as members of an
effective and creative staff team. The
volunteers who give so generously of
their time and talents and care so deeply
about each other and the community
have been fountains of information,
ideas, feedback and friendship that
never fail. I am in awe of the donors
and foundations who add to their financial support the gifts of enthusiasm,
ideas, and insight.
Partnerships too have introduced
us all to new people, and created very
special memories. I think of the richness

Volume 11, Issue 1
MY FAVORITE YEARS continued
of our relationships with The Carter
Society, the Mary Ball Washington
Museum & Library, the Northern
Neck of Virginia Historical Society,
the Retired Military Officers Association of America, St. Andrews Society of
Williamsburg, Grace Episcopal Church
and Campbell Memorial Presbyterian
Church, to name just a few.
Memories of events flood in. Hurricanes blew a few off the calendar;
funerals happened in snowstorms; we
celebrated Jamestown’s 400th anniversary with a 17th century communion
service at a sweltering 97⁰ F., but great
weather magically blessed most events.
The 50th Anniversary Groundbreaking,
Planter’s Picnic, Grand Opening and
“Burn the Mortgage” celebrations,
concerts, ten iterations of The Holly
and The Ivy Carol Sing in a church
bedecked with native greens, and
ten Annual Meetings, among others,
have drawn the Christ Church family
together. Travelling exhibits such as the
Smithsonian’s American Roots Music
and the Virginia Civil War Sesquicentennial displays brought a wider circle to
us. The modern Craft Beer Fest in this
colonial setting where beer consumption outpaced that of water widened the
circle more. Those next generations have
begun to appear, as the image of exclusivity changes to a reputation not just
for offering an authentic historical experience but for gracious hospitality—and
fun.
In terms of meeting goals, despite
nearly eight years of a very challenged
economy, we can now realistically set the
annual giving goal at $200,000+, and
have raised over $2.5 million to meet
capital and preservation needs. Our
sustaining resources, loosely dubbed
“the endowment,” have recovered from
a severe decrease in 2008-2009, and are
growing as more friends join the Robert
“King” Carter Society by advising us of
planned gifts. The widening scope of
our education, research, event, and partnering efforts has burnished the church’s
image as a major cultural and economic
asset of the local community—indeed
of the Commonwealth and beyond, and
shows in this increased financial support
from a wider public. Recognition as a
“Best of Virginia” attraction by Virginia
Living Magazine for two years’ running,
and a virtual tour of the Church online
at Google Earth link us to the world at
large. The church has, in a manner of
speaking, emerged from the woods.
These successes belong to the foundation, its board, staff, volunteer corps,
donors and partners. To have been
privileged to play some small role in
the process is a rare gift. To take away
these few years that encapsulate a lifetime’s worth of favorite memories is
a treasure. Knowing that the foundation will be exceptionally well served
by my successor, Clare Adams, by John
Bowden, by its wonderful staff and
volunteers, and by its faithful donors,
I take my leave with profound thanks
to all who have shared with me this
remarkable journey.

MEET HISTORIC CHRIST CHURCH’S NEW EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
I
t is with great
pleasure and
confidence that
the Foundation’s
Board of Directors has chosen
Clare W. Adams
to lead Historic Christ Church into
the future. Ms. Adams is a very experienced professional, trained in historic
preservation, museums, historic sites
and nonprofit management.
Clare holds a Bachelor of Arts in
Art History from Newcomb College
and a Master of Arts in Landscape
Architecture from the College of Arts
and Design at Louisiana State Univer-
sity. She has worked as a senior sites
restoration coordinator in the New
York State Office of Historic Preservation, Executive Director of the Mississippi Heritage Trust, Director of Preservation at Andrew Jackson’s National
Historic Landmark The Hermitage,
and as a preservation consultant.
Most recently, she served as Executive
Director of the Oysterponds Historical Society in Orient, New York. She
has expertise in grant writing, education, community outreach, and fundraising.
Clare describes herself as a bigpicture, detail-oriented professional,
innovative, analytical, and results-
oriented with enthusiasm, a strong
belief in collaboration, and a spirit for
innovation. She strives to create an
atmosphere that inspires volunteers
and staff to contribute time and talent
and that attracts, keeps and motivates
volunteers and staff alike.
Finally, based on personal observation by the members of the search
committee as well as comments from
references, Clare brings personal attributes of self-confidence and poise to
those she meets.
Welcome, Clare, to Historic Christ
Church and the Northern Neck!!!
“I became a docent at Historic Christ Church because of a love of learning about the history of
America. Now it has become more about sharing that interest with all the people who come to
HCC. It’s amazing and uplifting to be able to take part in these conversations with people who
come to visit HCC.” – ROBIN CURTIS

“I enjoy seeking answers to historical questions
and unraveling historical mysteries. Christ
Church abounds in both, so we are a good match!
As a researcher I get to play the detective, and
as a docent I get to share the excitement with
others. So, the volunteer work is both fun and
worthwhile. Who would ask for more? ”

Preservation of Historic Christ Church’s 1897 Roof
This photograph from the Historic American
Buildings Survey shows Christ Church’s slate
roof in April 1937, forty years after it was
installed. Notice the metal rolls along the hips
and ridges and the metal valley. Although
there appear to be a few loose slates,
overall the roof looks to be in good shape.
Much has changed since then. Explore this
photographic tour to learn why and how we
have undertaken a comprehensive campaign
to preserve the roof for another hundred-plus
years and beyond.
HOW BAD WAS IT?
This view of the ridge along Christ Church’s north
side underscores the need for comprehensive
roof repairs: roofing cement that has been
slapped along the ridge and hips is cracked and
deteriorating, a number of nails are backing
out of the cement on both sides of the ridge,
and several shingles appear to be loose or
damaged.
NEW UNDERLAYMENT
The 1897 slate roof had an underlayment of
felt which over time has become brittle and
disintegrated.
Instead of traditional roofing felt, a waterresistant but breathable material known as
slopeshield will serve as the new underlayment.
Where it overlaps, the slopeshield self-adheres
to the next piece, but in all spots where it lies
directly on the sheathing the team only nailed
it down to protect original boards.
Page 17
Ti m e L i n e s
HIPS & RIDGES
The 1897 slate roof originally had metal rolls
protecting its hips and ridges. These were
removed ca. 1965, new slates lapped over the
hips, and roofing cement tucked into the space
between the lapped slates. This roofing cement
is now desiccated and ineffective, making the
hips vulnerable to water.
This detail of the hip on the north side over
the west door shows the poor condition of the
roofing cement.
Compare the lines along this hip of newly
installed slates with those seen in photos to the
left. The team specially cut each piece of slate
to ensure a proper fit.
Foreman Jamie Marley holds a sample of the
new metal rolls that will cover the hips and
ridges. Made of Freedom Grey, a copper coated
with a tin-zinc alloy, the rolls go over a small
strip of ice-water shield (black material with
white lines visible here). The team used historic
photographs and ghost marks on some of the
slates to produce new rolls that match those
from 1897 in size and profile.
VALLEYS
Peter Post examines a valley (installed 1988)
on the northwest side of Christ Church. Just
visible along the left edge are remnants of an
ice-water shield that ran under the metal and
adhered to the sheathing. Valleys are some of
the most vulnerable points on any historic roof.
Christ Church’s new valleys feature several
layers of protection: the breathable but waterimpervious layer of slopeshield (red) nailed to
the sheathing followed by an ice-water shield
(black) along which the new terne-coated
copper valley extends.
DRIP EDGE
View of a drip edge sample. Installed along the eave, the copper drip edge protects against water
that might be driven or blown under the slate and threaten the sheathing.
Benjamin Curran (left) and Peter Post install
a section of drip edge along the north side of
Christ Church.

New Nominees for the Board of Directors
Fred Burke, Jr.
Local jeweler and owner of Burkes Fine Jewelers, Fred began working in the jewelry
industry at age 12. As head bench jeweler for more than 35 years, he is the second
generation jeweler at Burkes and holds diamond and colored stone certifications
from the Gemological Institute of America.
Fred has served as President of the Kilmarnock Chamber of Commerce, a board
member for the Kilmarnock Museum and the Downtown Kilmarnock Design
Committee. He is also a deacon at Irvington Baptist Church. His parents, Mr.
and Mrs. Fred Burke, Sr., were Life Members of FHCC. Married to Designer and
Co-owner Karen Burke, the two enjoy sharing time with their grandson Fin.
Elizabeth (Betsy) H. Woods
Betsy and husband Bob bought their home in Lancaster in 1998 and moved permanently from Northern Virginia in 2013. She earned her BA in History from Old
Dominion University and her MS in Library and Information Science from The
Catholic University of America. She also earned her culinary arts professional certificate from L’Academie de Cuisine while she agonized over going to graduate school.
Her career included program and project management positions at the Smithsonian Institution in strategic planning, budget and information systems. Later, she
managed the Ballistic Missile Defense Agency Technical Information Center. Betsy
currently is the Treasurer of Topside Consulting Group.
She has been a docent volunteer for FHCC since 2004, recently began work as
a librarian for the Research Committee and the volunteer library, and will succeed
Mrs. Carolyn K. Ratcliffe as Chair of the FHCC Cultural Resources Management
Committee.
Betsy serves as co-chair of the Altar Guild at St. Mary’s Whitechapel and is a
member of the choir.
Dr. Kathleen (Kathie) P. Galgano
Kathleen Galgano received her Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts Degrees from
the State University of New York Stony Brook and holds New York State teaching
certifications in Elementary Education and Secondary Social Sciences and Mathematics. In addition to teaching in the public schools, Kathie spent 18 years developing courses and teaching in the corporate training departments of (Northrop)
Grumman and Symbol Technologies. She introduced on-site college degree
programs at both companies at both undergraduate and graduate levels and assisted
in developing a graduate program in Mechatronics for Stony Brook University.
A Doctorate in Business Administration degree enabled Kathie to teach at Long
Island University as an adjunct in the School of Management for 15 years. She also
spent seven years working for BOCES (the New York Board of Cooperative Educational Services) teaching teachers how to use technology to support curriculum in
their classrooms.
Kathie is the daughter of Marge and John Page, Louise Belote Dawe Award
winners and volunteers at Christ Church since 1990. Marge has continued to work
in several capacities since John’s passing in 2009. Kathie and her husband Larry
retired in 2012 and moved from New York to Weems, Virginia, across the street
from where her grandparents had a summer cottage since the 1930s. Their greatest
blessings are their four children and eight grandchildren.
