No. 13/2013
June 20, 2013
Statutory Alert: Entry into force of the Australian Navigation Act 2012
Applicability: Owners and operators of vessels operating in Australian waters The Australian Navigation Act 2012 enters into force on July 1, 2013. Please refer to the flowchart below for details of those
vessels which will fall under the new Act.
One important change to the current arrangements is that all foreign flag vessels operating in Australian waters will become
subject to the Navigation Act. This means that they will also be subject to port state control which is not currently the case for
those vessels under state or territory jurisdiction.
Owners and operators are advised of this important change in order to prepare themselves for the revised legislative structure.
The Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) has issued a Marine Notice (MN 08/2013) which provides further details. Do you need further information?
