Statement of Purpose: First graders will think about the different careers they know and reflect on careers they
might pursue as they get older.
Activities: create different careers and make an ice cream cone of careers, read a book

2. The student will be able to reflect on careers (s)he knows about and create an ice cream cone of possible
careers (s)he may pursue in the future.

Procedure:
Introduction (8 min)

Define careers

Needs assessment.

Turn to a neighbor and list all of the jobs you can think of. Who are the people you see when you
are out with your family? What are jobs your families have?

Talk about how you have to work hard in school so that you can do any of these.
Main content/experiential activities/Processing (30 min)

Read book (7 min)

Discuss the different careers in the book. Any that weren’t on our list? (3 min)

Discuss different skills needed to so some of the jobs. (5 min)

Explain the activity and describe the steps. (draw/write, cut, glue)
Closing (7 min)

Have the students share their cones with another student in the class.

Explain the skills that the students need and how they should work hard in school so they can be
whatever they want to be when they get older.

Plan for Evaluation: How will each of the following be collected?
Process Data: head count of the number of kids in the classroom at the time of delivery
Perception Data: 100% of the students should be able to list at least 2 careers he/she may be when (s)he gets
older. 100% of the students should also be able to list at least one skill that might be needed.
