BACKGROUND
ENVIRONMENT: Ceuta lies in mainland Africa and is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean and
the Mediterranean Sea. It is a 7.1 sq mile autonomous city of Spain and an enclave located
on the north coast of North Africa. (Located just 20 km from the coast of Spain, prior to 1995
Ceuta was considered part of Cadiz Province.). Ceuta is surrounded by Morocco and
separated from the Iberian Peninsula by the Strait of Gibraltar.
NARRATIVE: No details
INJURY: Unknown, but the injury was serious.
TREATMENT: When the soldier was taken to hospital it was decided that his injured limb
should be amputated. The operation took place the next day. Outcome unknown.
SPECIES: Not identified. On July 28, 1911, several sailors saw a shark off the construction
quay of the Northern dock. They fought it for a short time before killing it. The shark was 3.5
metres long and weighed 400 kilograms.
The previous month, at the same place they killed another shark which was feared by
fishermen and bathers.

On the construction quay of the Northern
dock, several sailors saw a monstrous
shark. They fought her for a short time before killing her.
The shark was 3.6 metres long and weighed
400 kilograms.
A month previously, at the same place they
killed another shark which was feared by
fishermen and bathers. These monsters are
extremely voracious and they like to come
close to the beach.

From Ceuta
Ceuta 31. — Passengers arriving from Tangiers
aboard the steamship Vicente Ferrier have
confirmed that the ex-sultan Abd-El-Aziz has
frequently met with people from Kabilas in the
interior of the country; these meetings are thought
to be important.
Reports from Tetouan suggest that the region
remains peaceful.
The market in Ceuta has been extremely busy.
While a soldier from the garrison was bathing he
was bitten by a shark which left him seriously
injured.
When the soldier was taken to hospital he was in
serious condition and it was decided that the injured
limb should be amputated. The operation will take
place tomorrow.
