Band-Aid Changing the World
Band-Aid is a charity group that
mainly features British and Irish
musicians and recording artists. The
group was originally founded in
1984 to help raise money for antipoverty efforts in Ethiopia. Some
artists that sing in Band-Aid’s first
version of “Do They Know It’s
Christmas?” include George Michael, Boy George, Paul Young,
Bono (U2), Sting, David Bowie, Sir
Paul McCartney (The Beatles) and

In 1989, founder Bob Geldof gathered another group of musicians to
produce a new version of the song.
The second version became the 9th
largest selling song of that year and
even outsold Madonna’s hit “Like a

Need Advice?
Why the Time Change?
Ask Fran
Why do we have time change? I
heard that originally it started when
farmers needed more daylight to work
and blah, blah, blah. Now it’s different;
we don’t need more hours of daylight
because we have electric powered
lights. All time change does for us is
mess up our personal sleeping schedules
and the time we want to eat! Don’t get
me wrong, I love the extra hour of sleep
in Fall but why do we have to lose sleep
in the spring? Time change makes no
sense, especially here in Manitoba,
where we have dairy farms. The cows
on a dairy farm are used to being milked
at a certain time every morning. So, for
example, if the cows are used to 5am
then when it’s daylight savings time it
will be 4am, making the farmer get up a
whole hour earlier for half the year just
because of a stupid time change. Personally, I would rather have more daylight
in the evening anyways because who
wants to get up early? If there was more
daylight in the evening then maybe
more people would go outside after they
get home from work or school, but they
can’t right now because it is always dark
out! I understand that there are a lot of
changes from the summer to the fall and
from the winter to the spring but I really
don’t get why we have to change our
time. It makes no sense to me. In this
generation we do not need daylight in
the morning to work. I think it’s time
that we realize that things can change
now that we have advanced so much
with technology. I think most people
would benefit from extra daylight in the
evening instead of the morning.
Hayley Shirtliff
Is Change Good? Or is it Bad?
I don’t understand why so many people
find that change is a bad thing. Because
really it’s not. Change is happening all
the time. Your body is changing right
now. Cells are dying and new ones are
being formed. People change other people. For example after you break up
with someone you are most likely hurt,
but you learn and become stronger.
That’s change right there. That’s a great
example of change, good and bad. The
change was bad at the beginning but at
the end it turns out that the change was
kind of a good thing because you became stronger.
With change you learn so many new
things. If your life remained the same
you would get bored and wouldn’t learn
anything new! Just think, aren’t you
smarter than yesterday? Yes! You are!
Change also reminds us that anything is
possible. It’s hard not to think that everything is “stuck” in the same place but
seeing someone else’s change in life
will give you motivation to change
yours. Change also reinsures that bad
situations won’t last forever. It’s just a
rough patch in life.
Cola changed its formula in 1985. It
only lasted 79 days before it took everything back and used the old formula
again. See, if Coca-Cola didn’t change
the formula back to their old one we
probably wouldn’t be drinking it today.
Overall, I don’t think we should be
scared of change. Just let it happen! It
will probably be good for you. Change
can be a good thing!

Justin Trudeau, “Advocate for the Youth”
The Reality of Global Warming
This year, many students all over
Canada are going to have trouble
answering the number one Social
Studies question: “Who is our
Prime Minister?” This is because
within the last month, we have put
an end to Harper’s nine year leadership of our country and elected a
new Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau. Trudeau whose campaign
promoted “Real Change”, is starting to become an advocate for
youth today and for our future.
Through more student jobs and
affordable education, he really is
bringing a change to our communities. Over the next three years,
he is planning to create over
40,000 jobs each year. He also
plans to invest $40 million each
year into creating more co-op
placements for science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and
business programs. By doing this,
he is ensuring that students receive the experience they need to
gain full-time employment in the
work force.
Trudeau also plans on making
post-secondary education more
affordable. First off, he has promised to raise the Canadian Student
Grant from $2000 to $3000. He
has also stated that after graduation, students will not have to start
repayment for loans until they are
making a minimum income of
$25,000. In the long run, this may
decrease the amount of student
loans owed to the government
because it allows students to make
a living for themselves before they
need to begin paying for their
loans.
Finally, Trudeau is bringing various other changes to our country.
These include, but are not limited
to, a refundable tax benefit for
teachers, lowering the income tax
rate on the middle-class, and funding First Nations education. So
let’s sit back and see what our
new Prime Minister has to offer
before making any judgements.

When we hear the term climate change
we often don’t associate it with having
an effect on our own life. However,
research done by the Government of
Canada shows that Manitoba is and will
be highly impacted by climate change.
It is said that temperatures in the summer months will rise 3 to 4˚C and 5 to
8˚C in the winter. In the northern part
of the province the change only increases.
One concern is how the water quality of
our province will be in danger due to
the warmer temperatures and lower
volumes of rivers and lakes in the summer. With less volume of surface water
the pollution levels increase and make
it more difficult to sanitize our water.
The increased temperatures also effects
Manitoba’s hydroelectric production
because of reduced precipitation and
higher evaporation levels.
You may wonder what the big deal is.
It’s only a couple of degrees, it couldn’t
really make a difference, could it?
Well yes, it creates a huge impact on
numerous environmental systems that
are vital to many animals and to our eco
-system.
The weather patterns of our province
will also be impacted. Tornadoes, hailstorms, heat waves and droughts will
become more frequent and winter
storms becoming more intense.
Sabre Scoop
Climate change doesn’t only effect the
melting glaciers or rising sea levels, but
it effects our province and our own
lives. Our water, weather and polar
bears are only a fraction of the things
that global warming impacts. It’s important to realize that just as we are
affected by this problem, we are also
contributors to it.

Changing How We Remember
Remembrance Day on November
11th is a day set aside for us to commemorate all Canadian soldiers and

us that we cannot forget what ordinary people had to undergo or we will
become too distant from the past. We
cannot forget what happened or history will repeat itself.
Social media has played a very large
role in changing the way we see and
think about Remembrance Day. Now
with our light speed technology, we
are able to share, view and hear about
different events in war. This technology helps us to get a better understanding of what Remembrance Day
is all about and get a better understanding of what they went through.
We can now preserve what stories
and memories remain of these heroes
in our digital age. We are able to
share, broadcast and make these stories heard so that their actions are not
in vain.
What changes are seen in Remembrance Day being celebrated today
compared to 50 years ago? We still
see veterans and decorated soldiers
who tell us of their hardships; but do
we really understand what they went
through? Each generation becomes
more distant from the Great War. We
tend to lose that understanding of
what they had to endure and suffer.
One thing that has not changed over

red growing around soldiers’ bodies
in Northern France. John McCrae’s
poem, In Flanders Fields, was released and became widely known all
throughout Canada. The poppy soon
became a symbol of the greatest sacrifice and another form to honour the
fallen.
Services around Canada are slowly
building up in attendance numbers
and people are coming out to remember those who served. Thousands at
SaskTel gathered this year for a moment of appreciation and remembrance to honour our veterans. 9500
people showed up to this event which
is the largest indoor ceremony in
Canada. More than 4000 were in
attendance at the RBC Convention
Center in Winnipeg on Wednesday
November 11/15. People crowded in
to listen in the hallways and entrances
while standing because there was not
enough room. At Sanford Collegiate,
we too, still remember what has happened with a ceremony of our own.
This month for our Unsung Heroes of

Teamwork is how the ladies Varsity
Volleyball team fought through this
season. With complete dedication they
put in hours of morning and lunch practises. These women deserve a round of
applause. When they began the season,
most had already been playing together
so when the call came to join together
again, they quickly pushed aside their
differences and learned to fight for each
other. This fire to win was inside them
and they deserved every win throughout
the year. Mr. Taylor was the coach and
pushed the team toward greatness. Every home game drew a crowd and everyone cheered them on from the Mez.

Junior Varsity
To sum up the Girls’ Junior Varsity
season in a single word would be very
difficult, but overall improvement was
what was most seen this year. With
wins and losses covering the season, the
ladies worked hard for every win and
learned how to better interact with each
other on the court after every loss.

When the girls pushed in the zone final
for a win which would have taken them

winning and losing are a part of the

The film “The Intern”, directed and written
by Nancy Meyers, is a heartwarming comedy that was released to theatres on September 24th. This movie contains a wonderful
cast in which Robert De Niro (Meet the
Fockers) and Anne Hathaway (The Devil
Wears Prada) portray the main characters.
Some supporting roles are played by: Rene
Russo (Yours Mine and Ours), Anders Holm
(The Mindy Project), Adam Devine (Pitch
Perfect) and Zack Pearlman (The Inbetweeners).
The great cast isn’t the only asset that makes
The Intern a great film. The plot of the movie is easy to watch and comforting. Nancy
Meyers brings fantasies to real life, as well
as an uplifting storyline. The film takes
place in New York City in an old warehouse
that is transformed to a modern day office.
Jules Ostin (Anne Hathaway) is the founder
and boss of an online fashion company. Her
growing business is succeeding uncontrollably and is almost too much to handle. She
has a great staff on hand and one day decides
to hire for a senior citizen internship. A 70
year old widower named Ben, (Robert De
Niro) made a lasting impression during his
interview and was hired. Jules wasn’t too
crazy about the idea after a final decision
was already made. The interns were assigned
to long term staff members to follow around
and help out when needed. Ben was assigned
to Jules. Being the independent women she
portrays, all Jules asked of Ben was to sit
and wait until she needed something from
him. Of course, she didn’t need him for
anything. Ben saw through Jules’ determination and took matters into his own hands.
Ben is clueless in the terms of anything
online and must change his views on the
matter. He helps out Jules with the simplest
of things even when not being asked. For
example, he cleared a table that was called
“the junk table”. This table got on Jules’
nerves every time she walked past it. No
matter how many times she hinted at it, no
one ever cleared it. This act of kindness was
rewarded by receiving small little tasks to
do. At first Jules is skeptical of his behavior,
but soon realizes that he is an asset to her
growing business. One day, Ben sees that
Jules’ driver is drinking on the job. Ben
insists that he drives her around all day. She
again takes a minute to respond, but goes
with it. This makes their bond grow stronger.
They start talking about more personal
events as their time together grows longer
each day. Jules starts to think Ben was a
wrong decision as he now knows too much
about her personal life. She gets him transferred to a different staff member. Soon after
this occurs, Jules is lost without Ben and
begs him to come back. Ben and Jules become great coworkers and he tags along to a
business conference in San Francisco with
her. Jules shares some information about her
personal life and Ben gives her inspiring
advice as to how to go about things. Afterwards when they arrive back in New York,
Ben feels that he has thrived in this modern
day business in just a short time of being a
part of it. He shows Jules how to finally
relax and appreciate her accomplishments in
the end of the movie.
Robert De Niro and Anne Hathaway couldn’t have played their role any better. This
heartwarming movie was inspirational and
one of Anne Hathaway’s best. “The Intern”
was rated 60%. This rating isn’t the best but
it is most certainly not the worst. If you
decide to watch this movie, which
is recommended, you will not be
disappointed.
