Discuss the morphology of the words: suffixes, taking a root word and adding to it to change the meaning of the word. Have students talk about the meaning of each word, using antonyms, synonyms and situations where each word can be used correctly. a. cities b. continents c. country d. towns e. world Before Reading: ENGAGE! THINK! 1. Build Background Knowledge a. Let’s look at the front and back cover. What do you know about this topic? b. What would you like to learn about your country? c. What is the name of your country? d. Where would you go to look for your country? e. Do you know where the glossary is in the text? How is it helpful? f. Do you know where the index is in the text? How is it helpful? 2. Skill Introduction: a. Using Text features – look at page 4‐ how does the illustration help you? What have you learned by looking at it? 3. Strategy Introduction: a. Synthesizing – Have you ever thought you knew what size something was and later find out you were wrong? What made you change your mind? Is the United States of American the largest country in the world? Why or Why not? Let’s see if you opinion changes after you read this book. 4. Fluency: Phrasing/ Chunking – As you begin to read longer text it is important to phrase correctly to help with the understanding of the text. Read page 5. Model how you phrase the sentence. Standard – Today we will try to distinguish between information provided by pictures or other illustrations and information provided by the words in a text. Is the country bigger than you thought? Did you know some countries are by the ocean?

Task: Write an information piece about the United States of America. Use the information above to help you write.
