Dear Parents and Friends,
Staffing News:
At the beginning of Term 2 we saw the retirement of
our longest serving School Council Employee, Mrs Judy Alexander. Mrs
Alexander has been a parent volunteer (her sons Dean and Shane attended
Sunny North), a community member and Canteen Manageress for over 40
years at Sunshine North Primary School. Judy Alexander’s contribution
to our school has been outstanding and she has been the driving force in
making our Canteen so successful over many years. She always wanted the
best for our students and her service to our school is to be celebrated
and will be long remembered into the future. At Sunshine North Primary
School, we are delighted to honour Mrs Alexander’s dedicated service and
commitment to our students and school. It is with great pride and
admiration that the staff, students, parents and school community
congratulate her and say a big thank you.
At our Back to School Night during Education Week, not only will we
celebrate learning at Sunny North with our Passport to Learning, we will
also be holding our schools 60th Birthday Celebrations. This event
presents an excellent opportunity for everyone to say thank you and
goodbye to Mrs Judy Alexander. I invite all our school community to join
us.
We have also said goodbye to Mrs Robyn Pope. After a teaching career
spanning over 40 years, 12 of which were here at Sunshine North Primary
School, Mrs Pope has come to the decision to retire from being a full time
teacher. On behalf of the school community I’d like to thank Mrs Pope
for her many years of service, and I wish her all the best on her well
deserved retirement.
Mrs Karen Davis will be teaching 5/6P for the remainder of the year. Mrs
Davis has come to us from Arnold’s Creek Primary School and is excited to
be here. Mrs Davis has a love of the arts including music, theatre, art
galleries and painting. Mrs Davis loves being outdoors and keeping fit and
healthy is very important to her and her family. We warmly welcome Mrs
Davis to Sunny North and I am sure that the students in 5/6P will have a
great year learning with her.
Students in Years 5/6 Get a Chance to Tell Us What They Think!:
Our school is conducting a survey to find out what your child thinks of our
school. This is “The Attitudes to School Survey” and is organised by the
Education Department. The information that is gathered from the survey
will help us plan programs and activities to improve our students’
experiences at Sunny North. If you would like to know more about this
survey, please come and see me.

LEARNING AND BEHAVIOURAL VALUES 2016
Our Core Values are statements of belief about attitudes, skills, and approaches to learning that we want to
foster in our students. They are intended to permeate and to be reflected by every aspect of school life, in
and out of the classroom, as well as home and community life. In addition, they can be seen as broad
statements of purpose that focus the school’s energies in curriculum, programs, and policies.
Sunshine North Primary prides itself on being a safe and happy learning environment. Every 2 weeks we
focus on a particular value that contributes to this.
EFFORT:
What does it mean to show effort? It is when you try your hardest to achieve something
or do something, especially when it is difficult. Effort can be powerful as it is a belief or a
motivation to keep trying your hardest.
Students showing effort say:
“I’m
motivated to do my best.”
“I won’t achieve my potential without a strong effort.”
“I’m not going to be lazy, discouraged, frustrated, anxious or angry; I always give my
best effort.”
How do you know if you are showing effort?:
You always try to do your best to achieve your goal.
You don’t give up easily when you r learning is hard and difficult.
You can solve problems yourself because you put in the effort.
You ask for feedback from your friends or your teacher—do they think that you are
putting in the expected effort?
The Preps have made a wonderful start to term two.
They have continued to develop friendships with their peers and
have begun to learn about their personal and family histories.
As the Preps continue their journey, we would appreciate you
completing the ‘personal and family histories’ form (handed out to
students last week) and returning it, along with a labelled family
photo.
The Preps will also be focusing on high frequency words this term.
A list of these words will be included in their green book bag. We
ask that students read these words, along with their take home
books each week.
The preps have learnt some sounds and letters that go with an
animal. Have a conversation with your child about what sounds
they know now. Mm, Ss, Ff, Aa, Pp, Cc, Tt and Ii.
Thank you for your ongoing support.
Miss Warne and Mrs Camilleri ☺
Sunshine North has many wonderful enrichment programs and opportunities for student involvement which
contribute to their rich and well rounded learning experience at SNPS. The programs we offer are: Visual
Arts, Physical Education and Sports, Performing Arts, Languages (Vietnamese), the Kitchen Garden Program,
Breakfast Club, S.R.C, the Rainbow Room, and SPARKS just to name a few.
What a beautiful sunny day we had on the 15th of April when we went to the Moore Park for
the Sunshine District Cross Country Competition! Congratulations to everybody for their
effort in running the 2 or 3 km race; it was not an easy task to do. Special congratulations
to the following students who have qualified for the Keilor Division Competition to be held
on the 26th of May 2016 at Brimbank Park: Jayden Bach, Jules Barlow, Junior Alaelua,
Dafrosa Tuyisabe and Laxy Bavatharini Kalithas. They all need to continue working hard on
their fitness, as the next level of competition is going to be an even greater challenge for
them. Commendable effort and result by Aran Radhakrishnan, who was the youngest Cross
Country Team Member and finished in an excellent 12th place in his first attempt at this
type of competition. I look forward to his next year’s run; with his work on fitness I am
confident that he will do well.

Mother’s Day Stall: Mother’s Day is only a few weeks away on
Sunday May 8th. In keeping with the tradition, Sunshine North will
celebrate the occasion with a Mother’s Day Stall to enable all children
to purchase a small gift for their mothers, grandmothers or carers. The
P.F.A will run the stall on Thursday 5th and Friday 6th May. There will
be various gift packs available to buy, priced between $5—$15.00. Each
class will have the opportunity to come to the stall over the two days.
