The Power of Poetry A subsidised five day course to improve reading and writing in primary schools The Power of Poetry will demonstrate the importance of poetry as a vehicle for improving children’s engagement in and enjoyment of reading and creative writing in schools. Centre for Literacy We know through our research and experience that teachers feel they in Primary Education lack the confidence to teach poetry, particularly the writing of poetry. This course will develop teachers’ knowledge, confidence and expertise in their own poetry repertoire and about the teaching of poetry. Participants will receive creative training from poets Roger McGough, Valerie Bloom, AF Harrold, Sarah Crossan and anthologist Allie Esiri. They will be co-teaching in partnership with Charlotte Hacking, CLPE’s Learning Programme Leader. Funded by the Arts Council, each place costs £375 which equates to just £75 per day. Included in the price of the course are two theoretical texts plus a book from each of the poet tutors, associated teaching sequences and a course anthology. Course outline Book Now Each training day will focus on a different aspect of poetry to give participants a wide and varied experience of poetry in all its forms.
