The Power of Poetry

The Power of Poetry
A subsidised five day course
to improve reading and writing in primary schools
The Power of Poetry will demonstrate the importance of poetry as a vehicle for
improving children’s engagement in and enjoyment of reading and creative
writing in schools.
Centre for
Literacy
We know through our research and experience that teachers feel they
in Primary Education
lack the confidence to teach poetry, particularly the writing of poetry.
This course will develop teachers’ knowledge, confidence and expertise in their own poetry repertoire
and about the teaching of poetry.
Participants will receive creative training from poets Roger McGough, Valerie Bloom, AF Harrold,
Sarah Crossan and anthologist Allie Esiri. They will be co-teaching in partnership with Charlotte
Hacking, CLPE’s Learning Programme Leader. Funded by the Arts Council, each place costs £375
which equates to just £75 per day.
Included in the price of the course are two theoretical texts plus a book from each of the poet tutors,
associated teaching sequences and a course anthology.

The Power of Poetry
A subsidised five day course
to improve reading and writing in primary schools
Participants will explore:
• How the use of poetry in classrooms impacts on different kinds of learners
• The impact of their own experiences of poetry on their teaching of poetry in the classroom
• How poetry can be used to support the teaching of reading and writing throughout the school
Create a school anthology
Teachers will share their work and findings, looking at what they will take forward in their future
teaching and enjoyment of poetry in school. This will include collecting examples of children’s own
poetry writing. On the final day anthologist Allie Esiri will support the participants in curating their own
anthology, which will be compiled by CLPE and made available for each school.
Free Resources
Participants will receive seven books, teaching sequences showing how to put the theory into
classroom practice and a course anthology.
Poetryline
Course participants will use
