The Brunel English Language Test is an established test that has been developed by the Brunel Language Centre to evaluate your level of academic English. It provides you with an excellent opportunity if you are applying to study at Brunel University London or London Brunel International College (LBIC) and need to provide evidence of your English level. It also helps to determine whether you are required to attend an English language course prior to your academic studies. We provide fortnightly testing, year round. The results are emailed to you within 7 days of taking the test. The test is held on campus at Brunel University London throughout the year. Overseas testing is also available in selected countries. IPLC-BrunELT 8pp_Layout 1 10/06/2016 14:50 Page 4 Who should take the BrunELT? IPLC-BrunELT 8pp_Layout 1 10/06/2016 14:50 Page 5 Test Structure - campus based test The test comprises four sections Reading, Listening, Writing, and Speaking: Reading You will be given a piece of text to read. You will be expected to show your understanding of this by answering a number of questions related to the text. The Reading Test is divided into four sections: Part A: You are required to answer a range of question types, including True/False, where you read a number of statements relating to the text and decide whether they are true or false, justifying your answers with evidence from the text; Multiple Choice questions in which you have to choose the correct answer from three or four different options; and open questions. The questions in Part A test your ability to scan a text for specific information and to show understanding of key concepts. Part B: You have to match short paragraph summaries with a number of paragraphs in the text. You may, alternatively, be required to choose the best paragraph summary from a choice of two or more for specific paragraphs from the text. These questions test your ability to recognise global organisation of a text. Part C: You are expected to match words and phrases in the question paper with synonyms (words with the same or similar meanings) in the text. You are directed to the paragraph in which each word or phrase is found. You may also have to choose the best synonym for a word in the text from a choice of five possible options. This part of the exam tests your understanding of vocabulary from the surrounding context. Part D: You have to match referents, e.g. he, it, whose, etc. with the subject, person, idea, etc. which they refer to in the text. This part of the exam tests your ability to understand sentence level cohesion (how a text is organised and connected). Time allowed 60 minutes Writing You will be given three essay titles, from which you need to choose one title and write approximately 300-700 words on the subject area. Time allowed 60 minutes Speaking You will be given a short interview with the examiner. You will be asked questions on subjects such as your hobbies, studies and your home country. Time allowed 5-10 minutes IPLC-BrunELT 8pp_Layout 1 10/06/2016 14:50 Page 6 Listening You will be required to listen to a live academic lecture and show your understanding by answering a number of questions related to the lecture. The test is divided into three sections. You will receive the question paper for Parts A and B before the lecture, and you will be given 10 minutes to read the questions and think about the kind of answers you are expected to give. Part A: You will fill in gaps with numbers or words as you listen to the lecture. The questions in Part A test your ability to understand and note down discrete facts. Part B: You are required to answer a range of question types. You may be expected to decide whether statements are true or false, sometimes justifying your answer. You may also have to answer open questions, multiple choice questions and questions about steps in a process. You need to answer all the questions in Part B while you listen to the lecture. In this section of the test, you need to demonstrate your understanding of key ideas and processes and your ability to select key information, while discarding irrelevant facts. Part C: Once Part B is finished, the examiner will tell you to take notes for Part C in your question paper under the headings provided. A separate question paper for Part C will be given to you after the lecture and you will have 20 minutes to answer the questions for Part C, by using your notes, and to check your answers for Parts A and B. Part C tests your ability to take effective notes and your ability to interpret notes to answer further questions.
