INTIMATELY CONNECTED
INTIMATELY CONNECTED aims to reveal the exploration of design and creativeness in
contemporary jewellery making today; from applied, decorative, commercial or industrialized
designs, the selection of works will help novice and collectors alike explore this unique and
highly skilled art genre. The exhibition seeks to educate, inform and encourage the public to
see a cross-section of emerging and established artists from Australia and around the world.
Jewellery art like many other forms of fine art has the intention to express a sophisticated
and well-developed concept or narrative through its display and materials. Artists investigate
different topics to create individual pieces covering a broad spectrum of ideas and motivations;
a piece of contemporary jewellery has the ability to take on the role of adornment with
charisma, class and presence.
INTIMATELY CONNECTED will showcase new and existing works by contemporary artists
from around the world and Australia. Australian artists include; Benja Harney (Sydney),
Claire McArdle (Melbourne), Inari Kiuru (Melbourne), Karin Findeis (Sydney), Melinda Young
(Sydney), Natalie Rosin (Sydney), Zoe Brand (Canberra). Our international artists include;
Zoe Robertson (Birmingham), Natalie Dissel (Bali), Daniella Saraya (Israel), Vincent PontilloVerrastro (Indiana,USA), Reka Gottilieb (Budapest, Hungary), Vacide Erda Zimic (Lima, Peru)
Olga Rok (Slovenia), Elena Estaun (Madrid and NYC), Liaung Chung Yen (NYC) and Joyce
Makitalo (Manilia, Phillipines).
There are many types of Jewellery art that resonate with each of us. Whether it is passed down
from generations, received as a gift or bought for yourself, it is something that becomes selfreflective and transformative. Jewellery is often used as a form of self-expression it can draw
attention to sexuality or enhance beauty, show off wealth, signal status and project power
but wearing a work of art can also have an emotional meaning as well. The way the object is
touched, worn or experienced in a sense becomes part of the conversation, unique in design
and beautifully created.
The street is the home of popular culture; it is a place where people can shape and display their
identity, attributes and personality while developing their own character. This can be done
through piercings, tattoos, luxury jewellery or braided friendship bracelets. It has always had
an immense capacity to interact with audiences and becomes a part of our cultural existence.
Our body and the world also represent a fundamental quest for originality. The body has
addressed adornment since the beginning of time, and the focus for contemporary jewellery
has lead into the exploration of new parts of the body on a new platform that is challenging
and artistically appropriate. Our bodies become the display of contemporary representation,
whether it is the glittering commodities of gold, silver, diamonds, jewels or pearls it can also
be the everyday materials of metal, rope, leather, bones and chains.
Fully Sustainable
The gallery installation is fully sustainable with all
materials sourced from Reverse Garbage or other
recycled sources. Creative direction by Natalie Coulter
for Belle Flaneur with special credit to Contributing
Installation Artists Joshua Lunney and Sam Winters.
ZOE BRAND
Zoe Brand started her professional career selling rather expensive
writing instruments and occasionally the odd pencil in her hometown
of Brisbane. Needless to say this wasn’t awe inspiring stuff, so in 2005
she moved to Sydney and it was there that she found her calling, the
making, wearing and viewing of contemporary art jewellery. Since then
she has graduated with an Advanced Diploma in Jewellery and Object
Design, worked in galleries, made some jewellery, curated shows,
written words and drunk plenty of beer. Zoe is currently studying a
Bachelor of Visual Arts majoring in Gold and Silver smithing at the
Australian National University in Canberra.

cleverly fused to highlight the natural qualities of the materials with
complimentary and wearable designs.

ELENA ESTAUN
Elena Estaun started designing jewelry since her youth in Barcelona.
She began by experimenting with diverse and unusual materials
to create distinctive shapes and silhouettes. Over time, her pieces
developed into natural, organic and extravagant designs. Mixing the
same materials of costume jewellery with silver gave the pieces a
high-end look and an open path to jewellery stores. She enrolled at
St. Martin’s School of Design in London to learn more on experimental
jewellery and to develop her technique…
From London to Barcelona she discovered that what started as a
hobby became her passion. She began to work in a prestigious jewelry
workshop, where she learned from the highly experienced jewelers.
She learned to give a personal twist to usual materials… Driven by the
impatience for success she decided to move to New York to pursue
her studies in Fashion Marketing and Design at Parsons School of
Design. She continued traveling for inspiration and researching for
new materials such as bone, rubber, coconut shell and mixing them
with silver, creating every time a different design. Each piece is hand
made, and thus unique to any other piece she produces.
She has settled down in the big apple where she is making a name
and developing her personal brand. At the moment, she lives between
Madrid and NYC.
KARIN FINDEIS
Karin Findeis is a producer of ‘bijoux’, jewellery that plays in the
spaces between our understanding of the body and the object.
She is interested in the way jewellery, and other objects, link us as
individuals with the rest of the world. The intimacy and portability of
jewellery play an important role in this connection. Her ideas explore
the philosophical presence of jewellery through addressing the
notions of transience, perception, memory and collecting. Many of
these ideas have their origins in her early studies in photography, and
more recently a major source of interest has been the Enlightenment,
where the acquisition of knowledge lay in the objects that were
collected.
Karin has been exhibiting in Australia and internationally since
1988. Alongside making she also curates and occasionally writes
about jewellery. In 2006 she was the curator and coordinator of
on Location: making stories the 12th biennial conference of the
Jewellers & Metalsmiths Group of Australia held in Sydney. She is
currently curating By Example: contemporary Australian jewellery,
to be presented at the Museum of Arts and Crafts Itami in Japan in
March 2010.
Karin completed her doctorate at the University of Western Sydney
in 2008, with the exhibition, samples, and a thesis entitled Locating
Author Jewellery: a taxonomy of objects. She has previously received
a Master Visual Arts from Sydney College of the Arts, University
of Sydney and has also studied at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie,
Amsterdam.
Born in Newcastle, Karin is a first-generation Australian. After living
in Europe for several years she is now based in Sydney where she
holds the position of Senior Lecturer in the Jewellery and Object
Studio at Sydney College of the Arts.

REKA GOTTLIEB
Currently I’m studying Fashion and Accessory Design in the School of
Arts at the University of Applied Sciences in Budapest. Within my work
I’m mixing inspiring modern, fresh forms with traditional hand crafting
however experimenting with cutting edge technologies has become my
key focus over recent years. Flexibility, variability and constructability
are the three main components of my design philosophy.
Throughout my projects I’m often interested in creating multi functional
designs therefore customers can create their own unique product
according to their taste. Both the consumer and the designer can
continuously expand the collection this way. In addition to variability
the changeable components return on the tricky surface that would
change form according to the taste, creativity and body shape of its
wearer. According to my creative aesthetics structure defines shape,
yet shape doesn’t define structure.

INARI KIURU
Inari Kiuru is a Finnish-born artist, silversmith and graphic designer
who lives in Melbourne, Australia, with her daughter and husband.
Having recently graduated with Honours from Object Based Practice
(Fine Art) at RMIT University, her work is evolving to include objects,
jewellery, images and mixed-media installation. Inari reflects on
the magic within the mundane, observing and portraying seemingly
unimportant, everyday subjects with a sense of their often hidden
extraordinariness, or marrying them with unexpected elements.
For her, it’s important to share a personal experience of a place,
form, or an atmosphere in a way that evokes questions and opens
up possibilities for the imagination. Inari is inspired by industrial
landscapes, forests, dreamed far futures, cities, clouds and changing
skies; loves photographing rubbish on the roadside, houses in the
dark, and colliding with random strangers. She has exhibited her work
in group exhibitions since 2008 in Australia, USA, Germany, Estonia
and The Netherlands, and is planning her first solo show for 2015.

JOYCE MAKITALO
Joyce Makitalo’s pieces are handmade by third-generation artisans
from a community of goldsmiths, following time-honored methods
of production. The interesting combination of rough stones and
polished metal indicates the influence of past eras and the concept
of futurism. Her bold, raw and almost talismanic pieces reflect her
passion for art and her fondness for fashion.
Her works have been featured in international publications such as
Vogue US, WWD, Oprah, Marie Claire US, Paper Magazine, JCK and
Genlux, among others. They have also been seen on celebrities such
as Katy Perry, Paris Hilton and Liv Tyler.

ZOE ROBERTSON
An open-minded approach to challenging the boundaries of jewellery
coupled with an intuitive relationship with materials is the driving
force and motivation behind her practice based research.
Design ideas arise by experimenting with a breadth of unconventional
materials; often industrial in nature she redirects these manufacturing
processes to offer a new direction to the discipline. These processes
continually serve to initiate a visual language that is capitalised upon
to create her work.
Her work is exhibited within an international arena and recent
accolades include being awarded an Honorable Mention at the
Cominelli Foundation’s International Competition for Contemporary
Jewellery (Italy). As well as being selected for the European Prize for
Applied Arts (Belgium) and the ITAMI International Contemporary
Jewellery Exhibition (Japan). Alongside her practice she is Course
Director for BA (Hons) Jewellery Design and Related Products at the
world-renowned School of Jewellery, Birmingham City University, UK.

DANIELLA SARAYA
My name is Daniella Saraya and I am a new graduate of the Jewellery
Department -Shenkar College of engineering and design.
The world of jewellery for me is a place where I can ask, explore and
find new ways to create and work with materials, experiment and
learn how function composition and emotion come together in the
process of creation.
Making jewellery allows me to play and discover all kinds of materials
and colors, to connect them in different ways with reference to the
small details. It also gives me an option to study about 3 dimensional
structures and about the different ways to connect an object to the
human body.

artistic aesthetic is influenced by both Chinese culture and art. By
using metaphors in his designs, he thinks of his jewellery as small
expressions of art, desire, wit or sensuality, documenting time and
emotion. The work is not meant to isolate specific meanings, rather
suggest a moment of thought where stillness, beauty and illumination
can peacefully coexist.

a cross cultural conversation through showing
and supporting emerging and established artists
from around the world. We aim to foster a strong
appreciation in Australian audiences for a new generation of foreign and

these works.
By curating interactive exhibitions .M Contemporary aims to serve as a
platform that introduces all mediums of art ranging from traditional to
digital video art, interactive and immersive installations, showcasing
the skill, creativity and concepts of artists within these mediums
from around the world. .M Contemporary has a strong focus on
supporting these artists ongoing presence through regular exhibitions,
complemented by industry expert panel discussions, artist talks, social
events and more.
Recognising the need for broader participation and exposure to art,
.M Contemporary is also opening up itself to schools, universities and
