We are planning for an old fashioned Florida barbeque with all the fixings, including champagne and beer (and wine for the “nonbubble” drinkers), items for auction and live dance music by The Brass Evolution band. Ticket prices are $75 each or $125 per couple. The majority of the funds raised for this event will come from Sponsors and Underwriters (cash or in-kind donations to cover expenses). Packets have been developed and mailed to various businesses, organizations and individuals who have previously supported our annual gala events. Sponsorships start at $250 (including 2 tickets) and run as high as $5,000 (including VIP table for 10 guests). If you know of any business or individual who would be interested in supporting the mission of our Club and our 100th birthday celebration, please contact me at [email protected]. On behalf of the Board of Directors and “Bubble Q” event planning committee, I want to thank everyone who has already offered to volunteer their time and effort to help make this a successful fundraiser. It is a momentous occasion for our Club and it will be a fantastic party for our supporters in the community! The mission of the Fort Lauderdale Woman’s Club is to engage the women of Fort Lauderdale as volunteers who make a recognizable difference in addressing civic, educational, cultural and humanitarian needs in our community and beyond. Many current Club members have never had an orientation or an initiation ceremony to officially welcome them into membership. The purpose of this meeting was to do both. Linda used a PowerPoint presentation which traced GFWC back to founder Jennie June Croley, a newspaper writer who was refused admittance to see Charles Dickens at the National Press Club in 1869, so she formed her own Club Sorosis, which led to the formation of the General Federation of Women’s Clubs in 1890. To read the entire story go to www.gfwc.org The Florida Federation was formed in 1895 and joined GFWC in 1898. FLWC became a part of the federation in 1912. Linda emphasized the fact that as a member of FLWC, a woman is also a member of GFWC Florida and GFWC. A candlelight commitment ceremony followed her presentation and members pledged their intent to be a part of the work of the Club. Committee sign-up sheets were available on tables decorated with centerpieces to illustrate the Club’s departments and standing committees. These will be available at future meetings as well. After Linda’s presentation, District Director Darlene Vlazny shared information about upcoming District 13 events. Linda and Darlene were given certificates of appreciation as well as copies of Mae Silver and Susan McClellan’s book Watch Out, Ivy. My thanks to Jeannie Burke, Donna Richardson, Jean Deering, Alice Sachnovsky, Mae Silver and Linda Parlock who helped to make this a marvelous meeting. NEWS FLASH! With the help of 54 team members from the FLWC and our friends from the community (yes, you too Diva Security), we raised over $12,000 and placed just behind the long time winning ‘Sole Sisters’ for the top place crown. Each and every team member played a role in our team’s success. Considering this was first year, our achievement is phenomenal! France Karr and I (Co-Captains), thank the following for your support, we could not have done it without you! Our “Queen” Genia Ellis who alone collected $5,251. Annette and Bob Ross, Cesar Boggio and Luis Quiroz of Boggio Construction, for building an amazing pirate ship. Terri Heasley of Terrific T’s for making our t-shirts. June Kidd and Anne Sallee for organizing a fundraiser at Wine Warehouse; and its proprietor Felipe Villeceves, auction donor Health Oriented, and caterer Marci Boland from L’Hermitage Catering for making it extraordinary. And lastly to Tammy Gail, Glam-ATHON founder, for creating such an outrageous event! We look forward to seeing you next year!! $1,150 raised to help end domestic violence! — submitted by Alice Sakhnovsky I want to extend my appreciation to the FLWC members and friends who helped support the 12th Annual Woman in Distress 5K Safewalk Run Walk held on October 30, 2010. There were 60 teams and over 1,000 individuals who came together to take a step to end domestic violence. This is third year the FLWC has had a team in this event. My special thanks to the Club members, Mae Silver and Leslie Rambin (and her dog), who were available to join me and my family on the day of the event. My son James and our dog Angel, dressed in a pirate scarf (and yes she was recognized by many of her friends that walked last year) joined in the festivities. We arrived in the dark to Markham Park around 6:45 (I'm used to early starts from the many races and marathons I participated in for years) and were greeted by the Dolphins Cheerleaders (Honorary Chairs) when the race started at 7:30. We were blessed with friendship, beautiful weather and enjoyable food at the end of walk! Keep in mind that in 2010 you received extra months of membership for the same amount of money. This was because of our By-Law change that transitioned our Club’s year of record from January through December (previously it was from June through May). Apparently, we are one of the best priced clubs in town! Not to mention the best luncheon food... and wonderful women too! We have been able to accomplish a lot this year with our mighty band of volunteers including: the completion of another major phase of our Clubhouse restoration; installed a lovely new garden in Stranahan Park; entered a terrific float in the St. Patrick's Day Parade; had our very first “Club Diva 100" team in the Glam-A-THON, a team walked again for the annual Woman in Distress 5K Safewalk Run; and contributions were made to several worthwhile causes too numerous to mention. There is some aspect of the Club for every member to become involved in. We hope each of you will find your niche in our diversified and community service oriented club. In celebration of our 100th Birthday, we will be creating a Centennial edition of the Club’s Directory/Yearbook. If you want your information included in this special edition, please make sure to have your $50 dues paid by January 1st. Club Updates — submitted by Genia Ellis, Club 2nd Vice President New Clubhouse Windows Installed Construction of the Clubhouse continues with great visual results happening. With the installation of the new windows and doors, a new view and perspective will be offered to our members and the community. Friendly Construction continues to move forward under the direction of the Architect, Susan McClellan, and myself, Building Chair, and we are currently on schedule to meet the contractual end date. We look forward to the January presentation and ribbon cutting of the completed construction! Grants for FLWC Gardens This year, a focus of the FLWC has been the application for grant funding to implement plans for planting of botanical gardens throughout Stranahan Park. To date we have applied for three separate grants and successfully received $5,000 from Branch Bank & Trust (BB&T) under their Lighthouse Grant Program in August, and most recently we received a check in the amount of $1,250 from the Fort Lauderdale Rotary Club under their Community Grant Program. The third application is to the City of Fort Lauderdale in the amount of $22,500 in the hopes that this grant application will be successful in the 1st quarter of 2011. Oral presentation will be done at the City during December with recommendations being presented to the City Commission in February for the award. We will continue to search for other sources of funding and/or donation to continue this community project. Stranahan Park abuts the property owned by the Club and is open to the public. New Partnership with GFL Chamber The FLWC is working the Greater Fort Lauderdale Chamber of Commerce to become a participating member. Consideration is being given to a number of the Councils such as the Downtown Steering Committee, Woman’s Council and the Not-For-Profit Chamber groups. This partnership will permit the Chamber to use the Clubhouse several times a year during the day in exchange for monetary consideration. In addition, this partnership provides us the opportunity to network through the downtown and like organizations and also offer our building for rent to a wider group and for additional purposes such as classrooms or study groups. For more information about the Greater Fort Lauderdale Chamber of Commerce go to: www.ftlchamber.com. November, December 2010 / January 2011 Edition — The Red Hibiscus — Page 6
