School Sports Room Makeover
Armed with easy-build and a few high efficiency strategies, our makeover
team ventured to a local public school to help clear a path to an organised
sporting equipment room.
Typically sports equipment can be odd
shaped and tricky to keep tidy. This was
definitely the case in this sports room
which had turned into a bit of a dumping
ground.
Howards Organisation Expert Cathy Player
explains, “This was almost a room rescue
rather than a makeover. The goal post pads
had literally taken over the room as they are
used everyday. We saw a great opportunity
to make the room more kid safe and to give
the school greater access to their valuable

sports equipment. The system needed to
be simple and easy to maintain. Creating a
well labelled home for every item was key.”
There was already a good strong shelving
system in place on the right, but it was
lacking good containers for the sports
equipment. On the left of the room, the
old collapsing particle board shelf just
had to go. With everything pulled out of
the room and resorted into groups, (plus
a good sweep) the team managed to
complete the makeover in 4 hours.

It was broken down into 6 key solutions:
Solution 1: Goal Post Pad Unit
Big and bulky, these were the No. 1 items that
needed a home close to the door, as they are
used every day. A custom designed Howards
easy-build trolley was the answer. Housing eight
post pads snuggly, loading and unloading is fast
and easy which was essential for kids. Castors
were added to this solution for easy mobility.
Solution 2: Blue Pads Unit
A second easy-build unit was set up to house
gym mats and with these items now under
control, we had cleared an instant pathway to
the back of the room. Now the whole room
could be used instead of just the floor area.
Solution 3: Rack for Athletics Gear and
Cricket Stumps
A third easy-build unit was placed at the back
of the room with the shelves positioned at the
top of the unit. This left a cubbyhole at the
base of the unit for hard to store tee-ball stands
and cricket stumps. Shot put balls and discuses
are kept tidy by recycling existing trays.

Solution 4: Hook for Ball Bags
Ball nets can be messy to store. So we
installed a large elfa hook to get the ball bags
off the ground. Cathy notes, “this is a really
great example of how you can store anything
with a little thought and the hooks are strong
enough to easily store a couple of ball bags”.
Solution 5: Flex Tubs for Sports Gear
To the right of the room existing shelves were
originally filled with a mix of tubs. Instant order
was created by replacing them with Howards
own Flex Tubs. Lightweight with four integrated
handles, each tub is durable and comfortable for
kids to carry. Labels completed the system. Bulk

Solution 6: Hook for Rakes and Shovels
Last but not least, a new elfa hook was
installed behind the door to get control of the
long jump rake and shovel. A nice simple fix!

One of our favourite sayings here at Howards is ‘if you can see it, you’ll use it’.
With this space now organised, both students and teachers are able to fully utilise the
school’s substantial amount of equipment. What’s more it’s a great example to students
as to how efficient an organised system can be. Taking just four hours to complete, this
uniform and consistent solution is very achievable.
