Introduction
The Breakout Project is Canada’s biggest social innovation event purposefully designed
to scale world-changing projects.
With thousands of attendees, renowned speakers, a new online collaboration platform and a series of
engagement strategies, this event is designed to bring the resources together to transition social innovation
projects from ideation to measured impact within just 365 days.
48 Hours in the “Innovation Kitchen”
To scale a business quickly, four key ingredients are necessary:
1/ Attracting Talent
2/ Building Awareness
The Breakout Project will be attended by thousands of
people. Many more, perhaps hundreds of thousands
will be watching the live streams and connecting into
the collaboration platform online. Anyone, anywhere,
can offer their time and expertise to any project.
Imagine having 20 big fans of your business telling
everyone they know about it. Imagine them having
all the information they need within reach along
with a place to send their contacts to learn more,
get involved, and donate funds to the cause they
are actively involved in.
Teams will also be able to post jobs outlining specific
skill sets and tasks they require.
As the online environment for each team lives on
after the event, the teams will continue to attract
and coordinate talent throughout the year as they
work toward their goal. And we expect many parttime and full-time jobs to be created as a result.
Now imagine there were 1000 fans like this! If every
project supporter tells 100 people about the project,
and each of those supporters tell 10 more, a team
would have 1 million people aware of their effort
within 48 hours.
3/ Making Connections
4/ Sourcing Funding
The event is made to get people together. Many
connections will be made throughout the event both
in person and online. The online collaboration platform
will show profiles of all attendees, team members,
speakers and others; and functionality will allow for
people to connect and converse in this environment.
Just as anyone can offer their time, they may also
offer funds toward any project. Paid online through
our collaboration platform, attendees onsite and
online will offer micro-donations, and perhaps larger
sums so that the teams can build out their projects.
The teams will continue to crowdfund their projects
throughout the year.
The Breakout Project is designed to provide these ingredients to 7 world-changing enterprises, in a massive
way, over a 48-hour event unlike any ever conceived before.

An Innovation Conference
on Steroids
At The Breakout Project, you, along with thousands of
other attendees will learn from leading innovators as
they address how to scale businesses, how to inspire
audiences, how to build teams, how to leverage
technology, how they see our future, and why Canada
needs to take a leadership role in innovating solutions to
the very big and very real problems we face as a society.
But this isn’t your average conference.
Hundreds of thousands will be watching online via
live stream as you and your peers are challenged to
do all that you can to propel the teams to success.
Inside our “Innovation Kitchen”, you will be inspired
to become an active participant by offering your
skills, expertise, and time to any project. You will be
invited to connect with new people, help boost the
awareness of teams and source the funding projects
need from a worldwide audience. You will also have
the freedom to explore historic downtown Kingston
with Amazing Race-style challenges and enjoy our
pub culture in a way never before presented.
You can brush shoulders with business luminaries,
and share ideas with people of all backgrounds and
skill sets from across Ontario and beyond.
To conclude the event, you will celebrate with the
Sam Roberts Band in Springer Market Square
where 25,000 people gathered to enjoy The
Tragically Hip last August.
At The Breakout Project, you will learn, share,
collaborate and celebrate as a key member of the
“Innovation Kitchen” that will cook up large-scale
solutions to the biggest problems we face.

Be Inside the Walls
If you believe that we all can do better together.
If you intend to be part of the solution. If you have
energy, skills, or connections. You need to be inside
Fort Henry by 8:00 pm on Wednesday, May 10.
Take the time to explore this guidebook to better
understand the experience that awaits you. And
then go online to thebreakoutproject.com to get
your event pass, plan your visit and prepare for a
once-in-a-lifetime experience that you and several
other thousands of like-minded people will be able
to say they experienced first-hand.
A Breakout Year
Projects will receive donated funds to continue their
initiative throughout the next 365 days. Supporters
can follow along with their favourite team’s progress,
successes and impact. In 2018, we will gather again
to celebrate achievements and kickstart a new crop
of projects.
Audience Challenges
Throughout the event, teams and audiences will be
presented with challenges designed to boost their
projects. We will all witness and experience ways in
which innovators get us excited to contribute to their
world-changing projects. The challenges will include:
»

Meet the Band
City of Kingston Presents:
SAMROBERTSBAND
On Friday, May 12, Sam Roberts Band will be
performing at our closing ceremony in Springer
Market Square at 8:00 pm.
Sam Roberts Band is a Montreal-based touring rock
band who after six JUNO Awards and five MuchMusic
Video Awards, has implanted itself on the Canadian
Music scene with ease.

Winners of the 2004 Best Album JUNO Award for
We Were Born In A Flame, Sam Roberts Band is an
ideal choice for The Breakout Project thanks in large
part to their universal, cross-disciplinary appeal. In a
remarkable coincidence, the new album TerraForm
was recorded near Kingston, at The Tragically Hip’s
studio, the Bathouse.
It is a perfect matching with The Breakout Project,
because just like us, the album reaches high to become
far greater than the sum of its individual elements.

Meet the Teams
At our inaugural event, 7 fearless teams will seek the resources they need to achieve world-changing goals.
Each team will have 5–10 “pioneer members” — the people with the vision and drive to make change happen.
Team 1/ The 1 Million Teachers Project
THE GOAL
HOW WE WILL HELP
Train 1 million teachers in impoverished nations
within 365 days.
Over 48 hours, The Breakout Project will provide 1
Million Teachers with the essential resources it needs
to move forward. “We need funding, awareness, and
talent across technical, business development, content
creation and education system development to achieve
this mission,” says Team Leader, Hakeem Subair.
THE MISSION
Develop a subscription-based online learning platform
for teachers.
Today, education remains an inaccessible right for
millions of children around the world. More than
72 million children are not in schools while 38% of
children in schools are not learning the basics of
reading and math.
Every education system is only as good as the
teachers who provide the hands-on schooling.
Studies have confirmed their critical role in improving
education-quality and learning-outcomes for children.
Moreover, in the new world economy, education is
humanity’s best hope for a sustainable society that
further fosters caring and responsible citizens.
MEET HAKEEM SUBAIR
Team Lead / Queen’s Masters Student
Hakeem Subair’s career spans investment, retail and commercial banking,
microfinance and strategic business development. Originating from Nigeria,
Subair and his wife realised a lack of good quality education in their country while
searching for a school for their daughter. Without the right tools for teachers,
students would never stand a chance at achieving high-level performance. It is
through this realization, that Hakeem aims to make quality education accessible to
teachers in Nigeria and beyond. Subair arrived in Canada in 2012 and is currently
working on his Masters of Entrepreneurship & Innovation at Queen’s University
while simultaneously finishing a certification at the Centre for Social Impact.

Team 2/ Change For A Dollar
THE GOAL
HOW WE WILL HELP
Replace the missing billions in charitable donations
resulting from our cashless society.
“The Breakout Project came to us at the perfect
time,” says Rhea Claus, Team Leader, “we were
already amping up to get this project going and it
will help us gain access to the resources, experts,
industry leaders, and support we need.”
THE MISSION
Change For A Dollar takes the idea of charitable
giving and is innovating it using technology to
improve the ease and experience of charitable
donations. Technology has caused the problem that
Change For A Dollar has set out to solve — over
57% of consumer purchases made in Canada
are cashless, with changes in payment altering
the landscape of charitable donations. The World
giving index ranks Canada as one of the top 10
most generous nations, yet charities are losing out
on billions by only accepting cash donations. The
Change for a Dollar Project aims to use technology
as the solution to the problem it has arguably created.
“Success for our team is the experience of going to
The Breakout Project event. As 5 women working
in tech we are used to things being crazy and this
experience, as a challenge, is considered a success.
While for the project, it’s validating the idea, getting
support for it across the country.”
MEET RHEA CLAUS
Team Lead / Project Manager at Usful
Rhea Claus knows that planetary change is inevitable. That is why she has
dedicated her time and passion to Usful, an initiative-based company that prepares
communities for this reality through technology, design, and education. Rhea
identified a problem where charities only accept cash donations but people rarely
have change. This is a problem created by technology, therefore it can also be
fixed using technology. For Rhea and her five Change for a Dollar team members,
participating in The Breakout Project already feels like a success in itself.

Team 3/ E=STEM365
THE GOAL
HOW WE WILL HELP
Open the door to STEM education for 300,000 girls
in 365 days.
“We need to build economies of scale to reduce the
price of the Jade Robots,” says Team Leader, Myke
Predko. “Further, we need to educate 150 teachers
to provide the classroom training, and source an
operational team to support our rapid growth.”
THE MISSION
40% of all modern jobs require high school academic
level Math and Science. At present, only 8% of girls
(26% of boys) are enrolling in advance Grade 9 programs.
The Jade Robot is a low-cost, pre-assembled
teaching tool that provides youth with an easy,
quick, fun and challenging way to learn many of the
key principles of Science, Technology, Engineering
and Math (STEM).
Surveys from students working with the Jade Robot,
show the following successes:
» 25%+ increase in interest in STEM as a career
» 30%+ increase in interest in post-secondary
education
Over the past 3 years, it has been found that girls who
have attended grade 8 “Systems” science strand with
the Jade Robot have enrolled in academic math and
science at an astonishing rate of 92%.1
1
Taken from sample of 600+ students, 480 of which were girls.
MEET MYKE PREDKO
Team Lead / Designer of the Jade Robot, Chief Roboticist & CTO of
Mimetics Canada Digital Education
Myke Predko is an award winning Engineering Manager with 25+ years of
experience in designing and developing hardware and software products as well as
an established electronics educational author. Myke built his first robot at the age
of 13 and has been teaching about robots and technology since 2001. The Jade
Robot is a fully-developed educational robot designed to engage and excite the next
generation of scientists and engineers. For the past six months, the Jade Robot has
been teaching young students about robotics and programming while changing their
attitudes towards Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).

» Make connections to their community by engaging
»
THE MISSION
The Youth Who Care project is a leadership program
designed for youth currently under government care.
Youth in care are often portrayed in a negative light
and placed in circumstances that restrict access to
opportunities. This program aims to solve this issue,
by providing them with a chance to connect to their
communities and communities across the world while
making a difference in global issues.
The program will include a yearly curriculum teaching
essential life and leadership skills, while promoting
philanthropy.
»

difference in their lives and the world
HOW WE WILL HELP
We hope that the The Breakout Project will bring
ideas, the teachers, the program implementers, the
world-wide connections, the funding, and the fan base
needed to scale our project nation-wide and beyond
within our first year.
MEET CARLY COXFORD
Team Lead / Social Worker
Carly started working for Batshaw Youth and Family Centres as a recall educator in
2006. Over the last ten years, she has worked as an educator in the different group
homes and residential units, as a unit support worker offering aid to both staffs and
youths during times of difficulty, and as an after-hours assistant manager. She did her
BA in Human Relations and Masters in Social Work, and is now a social worker.
Helping others through humanitarian projects abroad has been a life goal of hers for
years. With this program she will not only get to fulfill her dreams but also get to share
these experiences with youth in care. She truly believes this program has the potential
to leave lasting impressions on the youths involved, and inspire a new generation of
positive leaders.

Team 5/ Focus Forward for Indigenous Youth
THE GOAL
HOW WE WILL HELP
Provide indigenous youth across 50 different
communities with opportunities to develop
professional and personal skills as they build small
homes and greenhouses in their communities.
The Breakout Project will help us gain the initial
momentum we need to make this program
possible. We see this event as a means to generate
awareness and understanding of the underlying
social issues driving our mission. We will need to
attract the the funding, expert staff and volunteers,
community contacts, material resources, and the
ideas and guidance needed to execute this gamechanging project.
THE MISSION
Focus Forward will build an educational program
for indigenous youth in communities across
Canada. Working with contractors, educators,
logistics specialists, and community supporters,
this program will teach youth hands-on building
skills, build confidence, develop life skills, and
create much needed new housing and greenhouse
structures in indigenous communities.
The program will allow youth to gain work experience as
they earn high school credits and apprenticeship hours.
We hope to start as many as 50 projects for
indigenous youth across 50 different communities in
our first year. And we’re going to need a lot of help to
get there from a standing start!
MEET EVAN VERYARD
Team Lead / Royal Military College Master’s Student
Evan Veryard recently graduated from McGill University, and is now pursuing a
Master’s degree in Chemical Engineering at the Royal Military College of Canada.
This past summer he turned his passion into a profession and started on his own
woodworking business through Ontario’s Summer Company Program. Since then,
he has been running a woodworking program at the Kingston Aboriginal School
where he enjoys the opportunity to pass on his love of woodworking. Working with
this program motivated him to try to do more and create something with even more
impact — and The Breakout Project is as big as it gets.

Team 6/ MAPP Canada
THE GOAL
HOW WE WILL HELP
Our goal is to share 10,000+ inspirational Indigenous
stories from across Canada and generate 2 million+
MAPP Canada supporters in 365 days.
Through The Breakout Project, MAPP Canada
can rally the support of all Canadians who want to
contribute to the empowerment of Indigenous identity
and inclusion across Canada. We want The Breakout
Project to help make MAPP Canada a national
phenomenon — bridging the gap between Indigenous
peoples and Canadians for a better Canada.
THE MISSION
MAPP Canada will connect 1.4 million+ Indigenous
people across Canada with the rest of Canada
and the globe using a creative multifunctional and
socially transformative online platform. Our goal is
to engage Canada’s First Nations communities, Inuit
communities, Metis settlements and an increasing
urban Indigenous population. Our objective is to
generate an online knowledge bank, sharing 10,000+
Indigenous inspired stories in 365 days. MAPP
Canada is a social empowerment tool with a mission
to promote and celebrate the positive achievements
and contributions of Indigenous peoples and their
communities. Its purpose is to effectively shift the
Canadian social mindset by transforming the national
narratives of Indigenous peoples through storytelling
using MAPP Canada.
MEET SHYRA BARBERSTOCK
Team Lead / Co-founder at MAPP Canada
A serial entrepreneur and Indigenous scholar, Shyra’s business journey began with
the advent and debut of the Okwaho Network; Canada’s first social networking
platform dedicated to the empowerment of Indigenous business on a global scale.
Since then, Shyra has created several Indigenous led businesses including her
flagship company Okwaho Equal Source Inc. (2016), dedicated to empowering
Indigenous entrepreneurship and championing minority business and commerce at
home and abroad. She is the current President and Global Chair of Okwaho Equal
Source Inc.

THE GOAL
HOW WE WILL HELP
Create 1,000,000 new relationships between youth and
local police across North America within 365 days.
Together with the support of Boys & Girls Clubs across
North America, local police forces, and new partners
we hope to find with The Breakout Project, that we will
source the ideas, funding and momentum required to
build a toolbox of effective community programs.
THE MISSION
For every $1 spent building relationships between
youth and police, up to $17 in future justice system
costs can be saved. With this finding in mind, we
intend to develop and implement innovative new
programs that breakdown societal barriers and
change the way kids and law enforcement officials
