National Day and Commemoration Day
National Day celebrations took place on Monday and begun with a National Day
Assembly which brought together High School and Primary School students, staff, parents
and visitors.
The audience enjoyed a range of performances from High School and Primary School
students with our MC for the morning, Ms. Dalal, from the Primary School ensuring the
programme ran smoothly. Thank you to all those involved; we appreciate all the hours
and effort that goes into organizing this event and we were rewarded with a very
successful whole school National Day Assembly.
Attitude of the Week - Integrity According to Victoria Kindle Hodson, co-author of Respectful Parents, Respectful Kids,
the most effective way to teach children respectful behavior is to model it yourself. There
are also strategies you can use to teach the value of respect.
Expect good manners - acting in a polite way shows you acknowledge and value the other
person - greeting people, saying ‘excuse me’ and please and thank you can be taught from
a very young age.
Don’t tolerate rudeness - make it clear that no matter how angry or upset you may feel
reacting/speaking rudely is not acceptable. Talking about feelings is important; so is
teaching children when they make mistakes, they say sorry - this shows they care enough
about the person they’ve disrespected and take responsibility for their mistake.
Teach Listening Skills - giving the speaker attention, making eye contact, waiting for a turn
to talk, not interrupting, removing distractions (i.e. putting down the ipad or phone when
speaking with another person) are simple ways to teach children to become good
listeners.
Establish Rules - setting boundaries teaches children that the world doesn’t revolve
around them; they also have to consider others. Explain the rules/boundaries and more
importantly, ensure if these are broken there are consequences and these are followed up
on.
Encourage open-mindedness - we are not all the same, allowing opportunities for new
experiences, meeting new people and different perspectives are positive strategies to
encourage children to show respect.

words about love and our families as well as the UAE. We have been busy creating artwork for
National Day and celebrating the flag. This week there will be some homework for Arabic in the

Dear Year One Parents,
Ms. Joannah Powell
This week during our Unit of Inquiry lessons, we have continued to learn about the process of how
foods are transported to us and the positive and negative impacts of these. In Mathematics this
week, we have continued to use language to compare quantities, for example, more, less, first,
second. In Language, we have been recapping the features of a recount during our Shared Writing
lesson when we wrote about our UAE National Day celebrations. We remembered to use time
connectives, capital letters, finger spaces, full stops, openers and connectives. During Guided
Reading we have been showing an understanding of how a book works, for example, cover,
beginning directional movement and end. We hope you enjoyed discussing your child’s writing book
with them last weekend and it helped inform you of their progress.

Over the next two weeks, children will consolidate their learning about the Solar System
by creating their own non-fiction book. Children will write a report on each of the planets
in our Solar System, before writing a glossary using their chosen space vocabulary.
In Mathematics we will begin to look at the concept of money. We will start recapping
recognizing the different UAE dirhams before looking at simple addition and subtraction
number problems using the UAE dirham. Children should continue to consolidate their 2, 5
and 10 times tables.
This week there is no set homework. Children should consolidate their knowledge about
space and the Solar System to help them with their non-fiction report writing next week.

Year 3 have had a busy week. On Sunday, we visited the Habtoor Grand Hotel where students had
the opportunity to see the importance of organisation for a system to operate successfully.
Students learnt about the different areas within the hotel and how they are all linked
together. They spoke with the Manager of Development and also the Head Chef who gave them
valuable advice and information about the importance of being organized on a daily basis. We
would like to thank Mr. Khalaf Al Habtoor and all the staff of the Habtoor Grand Hotel for their time
and generous hospitality to our students.
Students also participated in the UAE National Day celebrations held on Tuesday 28th. It was a
fun-filled day and it was great to see our students embrace the culture of our host country.
Next Monday, December 5th is Year 3 Sports Day which promises to be an active and enjoyable
event for all students and parents alike. Students must wear their house t-shirt and these can be

In Language we are completing our instructional writing. Students are writing their own sets of
instructions. Instructional texts usually show how to do/make something or explain how
something works. They also often include diagrams to assist the reader in understanding.
We are also continuing our weekly guided reading groups, decoding words, answering
comprehension questions, as well as making evaluations and inferences on the texts.
Next week we will begin our third Unit of Inquiry. As usual, we like to keep this a surprise for the
students until we have completed a provocation with them.

FOOTBALL - BOYS YR5
The School of Research and Science (SRS) came to Meadows with an unbeaten record and a large
goal difference. The mood in the camp showed that our U10 boy's football team were confident
that they had the game to take on this strong team. From the whistle, Meadows’ teamwork put
them in front with a goal in the first minute. By halftime, the score was 3 - 0 towards Meadows
and the team was riding high with confidence. However, their lack of concentration allowed SRS
to knock in 2 quick goals to make it a single goal difference. It was good to see the team pull
themselves together with some good communication and football skill to score a goal to take the
win at 4 - 2.

undefeated season for them. They finished top of their league for the 2016 season. A formidable
feat considering this is the first time they have represented the school together. The team should
make the finals out at Rashid School for Boys. This means that they will be running into other top
teams from the different DASSA leagues around Dubai. Good luck and keep training hard.
FOOTBALL - BOYS YR6
The U11 boy's football team worked hard during the first half of their match versus The School of
Research and Science (SRS). They were rewarded with a very nice team goal that was headed in
by our influential striker. During the second half, the SRS boys began to string together some very
good passes and movements. Unfortunately, their players came to play some good football,
which saw them work 2 very good shots/headers into our goals.
It’s been a difficult season for our U11 boys. They have put in a lot of hard work during training
sessions and games. The opposition has often been behind, however their second half efforts and
perhaps our fitness have allowed them back into the match. Unluckily for our team, 2 losses have
come from last minute goals. A heart breaking experience for boys so young. Each time they have
picked themselves up off the ground and come back to training with more intensity. As a coach, I
am proud of their effort and also how much they have grown at a team. We did not get the
results that they wanted, however, the boys can hold their heads up high and be proud of their
efforts and contribution this season.

GIRLS YR5 & YR6 FOOTBALL
A big congratulations to our Year 6 girls football team who have finished first in their league. They
have developed so much as a team and it’s a well deserved win. They will now play in the finals
on Monday, 5th December at Kings Nad Al Sheba against the other schools that have finished in
the top 2 in their sub leagues. I’m sure you will join me in wishing them luck as they move into the
next stage.
Our Year 5 development squad had their second friendly match this Sunday at home against
GEMS Wellington International. The girls have shown good improvement since their last match
and are working better together as a team. It was a really close match between both teams and at
halftime the score was 0-0. GEMS attack came back strong and they managed to sneak a goal past
our keeper to take the final score 0-1. Despite this our girls kept on fighting showing some
excellent defense and a couple of close shots at goal by our attackers.
The girls have one more friendly match on Monday 12th December against GEMS Wellington
Silicon Oasis.
The last training session after school for both teams will be Monday 4th December.
GIRLS YR5 & YR6 NETBALL
Over the last couple of weeks I have been holding trials and selecting a team for our Year 5 development team and our Year 6 representative team for netball.
We have now started our training and the Year 6 team attended a preseason warm up
tournament at Kings Al Barsha on Tuesday. This was an excellent opportunity for the girls to get
some valuable match experience in preparation for the start of the league in January. The girls
were grouped with 4 other schools to play 4 short matches. More details to follow next week.
Year 5 will attend a similar tournament next week on Tuesday 6th December.
The last training session this term after school for both teams will be Tuesday, 13th December.
Training will then resume on Sunday’s in Term 2 starting 8th December.
