Breaking News!
Dr. Gina Ogilvie joins SPPH as
Canada Research Chair in Global
Did you know that it’s not just humans who go through puberty? Just
think of the difference between a kitten and a full-grown cat – most
animals have a „growing up‟ phase too! One of the changes girls go
through during puberty is they start to get their period. Because puberty
affects private parts of the body, it‟s not something people talk about all
the time! But, because puberty can affect your health, it‟s something
really important (and interesting) to learn about. Here are some common
questions and answers about periods:
What does the word ‘menstruation” mean? Menstruation is the
technical term for periods. The word menstruation or „period‟
describes the few days each month, once a woman goes through
puberty, when a small amount of blood passes through and out of the
vagina.
Why do women get a period each month? If a woman gets

pregnant, the baby grows in a part of the body called the uterus. The
uterus is an organ inside the body that is made mostly of muscle. It
stretches and grows as the baby grows. Inside the uterus, there is a
special lining that helps give the baby all of the nutrients and safety it
needs to grow. After a woman goes through puberty, every month,
the body starts to practice building up this lining so it can be as
healthy as possible if and when it‟s needed to support a baby. For all
those months when there is no pregnancy, this lining is shed as a
„period‟. Then, a new lining is made and shed the next month!
Why do girls start their period at different ages? There are a whole
bunch of reasons why people start puberty at different times. Usually
girls will start to go through puberty between the ages of 8 and 13
years old. Depending on things like genetics (meaning, how old your
parents were when they started puberty) and your overall health, some
people start puberty a bit earlier or later than other people. The
important thing to know is that you can always talk to an adult you
trust (like a parent, nurse or doctor) if you have questions about
puberty.

People spend years studying a vaccine in a laboratory (with computer and
animal models) before the first dose is ever given to a human! When the
lab tests go well over a long time, the vaccine can start to be given to and
studied in very small groups of people who have agreed to be part of
research. It is thanks to people in these early studies that we are able to
learn about and develop new life-saving medicines! After early, small
studies show that a vaccine seems safe, bigger studies are done.
Eventually, we know the “new” vaccine has safely and effectively been
given to thousands of people! At this point, the vaccine maker applies to
the Government of Canada and other countries to get the vaccine
”licensed” meaning it can be given to the general public. Even after a
vaccine has been licensed, the National Governments continues to keep a
close eye on vaccine safety. If someone has a serious or unexpected
change in health within a certain amount of time after getting a vaccine,
that information gets reported and collected so that doctors can decide if
those changes in health were probably related OR not related to the
vaccine.
