Guyana A cabin at the Eco-‐Lodge Housing • • Accommodations in Georgetown at the beginning and end of the program will be in guesthouse/hostel. While in Surama, students will be housed in cabins at the community-‐built Eco-‐Lodge at the edge of the forest. The Eco-‐Lodge has running water and a community-‐run kitchen where daily meals are prepared. This Fieldwork-‐Based Program Includes: • Six to nine nights in Georgetown, Guyana’s capital, where students will learn about coastal Guyanese society, begin preliminary fieldwork, and visit museums and historical sites • Four to five weeks in Surama village, where students will participate in daily life, conduct fieldwork, and eventually develop independent research projects. Classes held every evening. • River trips and excursions into the rainforest can be arranged with local guides, with Instructor permission. The program will be led by Dr. Laura Mentore, Assistant Professor of Anthropology at UMW and Dr. George Mentore, Associate Professor of Anthropology at UVA. Recommended for upper level students interested in social research methods. Open to non-‐UMW students. Requirements • • • • Minimum 2.5 GPA Prerequisite: ANTH 317: Amazonian Societies. Brief written application and interview with Program Directors Students can complete UMW general education requirements for Experiential learning or Global inquiry. A contract must be filed with the Registrar prior to departure. Course • • • • • • • • • Getting up close and personal with the tropical environment of Guyana in the rainy season. Six course credits in Anthropology. Focuses on developing qualitative research skills, namely participant observation. Required readings prior to departure. Attend lectures, group meetings, and organized tours while on site, as well as participating in daily fieldwork. Writing Intensive Create an independent research project based on your interests and experiences in the field. Meet each evening to discuss the day’s events, read excerpts from your ethnographic journals, receive feedback Develop a more applied understanding of anthropological theories, methods, and debates.
