American Revolutionary War 1776-1783
The last major battle was at Yorktown, Va in 1781 and took until peace was agreed in with the Treaty of Paris Sept 1783
The Chesapeake-Leopard Affair was a
naval engagement which occurred on June
22, 1807, between the British warship
HMS LEOPARD and the American frigate,
the USS CHESAPEAKE when the crew of
the Leopard pursued, attacked and
boarded the American frigate looking for
deserters from the British Navy.
The Embargo Act of 1807 and the subsequent Nonintercourse Acts were American laws
restricting American ships from engaging in foreign trade between the years of 1807 and 1812.
The Acts were diplomatic responses by presidents Thomas Jefferson and James Madison
designed to protect American interests and avoid war. They failed, and helped cause the War of
1812 between the U.S. and Britain.

Ontario performed Revenue Duties.
After the start of the War on 1 June, she
returned to a full time Naval Vessel.
Most Revenue Vessels were of the 30’
schooner range.

June 1, 1812, President James Madison sent a message to the Congress, recounting
American grievances against Great Britain, though not specifically calling for a
declaration of war. After Madison's message, the House of Representatives quickly
voted (79 to 49) a declaration of war, and the Senate agreed by 19 to 13.

On the morning of 17 July 1812, a combined British and Native American force of seventy
war canoes and ten bateaux under the command of British Captain Charles Roberts attacked
Fort Mackinac.
U.S. Military notification went by mail to the troops. John
Astor's sent messengers into Canada on 1 June to secure his
goods and in doing this notified the British/Canadians of war.

of soldiers, men, women and children when
they abandoned the fort to go south to
Ft Wayne Indiana.

The 44-gun frigate USS CONSTITUTION encountered the 38-gun frigate
HMS GUERRIERE off the coast of Nova Scotia, on 19 August 1812.
In the course of this 35-minute battle, an astonished sailor observed British
18-lb. iron cannonballs, bouncing harmlessly off USS CONSTITUTION’s 25inch oak hull, and he cried out, “Huzza! Her sides are made of iron!”
Henceforth, USS CONSTITUTION carried the nickname “Old Ironsides.”

900 inhabitants, 400 killed in battle, 200 marched north to Detroit never to be heard from
again, 200 POW in Amherstburg only 33 survived the massacre out of the remaining 100.

U.S. Army to date, including General Pike in York.

Battle of Thames, 5 October 1813
• The Battle of the Thames, was a decisive American victory in
the War of 1812. It took place on October 5, 1813, near
present-day Chatham Ontario in Upper Canada. It resulted in
the death of the Shawnee chief Tecumseh, and the
destruction of the Native American coalition which he led.

Did you know that the traditional West Point gray cadet uniform, still in
use today, was patterned after uniforms worn during the War of 1812
because they ran out of blue material and the British thought they were
