August 2013 EAA Ultralight Chapter 1 Issue 400 The Fun Fly Zone was usually pretty busy down at the South end of the AirVenture Grounds. The tower has been dubbed “The Beagle’s Nest” in honor of Frank Beagle, the voice of the ultralighters. Donny Rector and Corey Cassavant had the honor of taking Frank Beagle’s son and his fiancé’ for flights in their Quicksilvers. I will be brief as time to send out the newsletter is short and I don’t want to be the one holding it up... again. This year’s AirVenture event was a great success thanks to all the eager volunteers. I’d like to thank all that participated in our annual pre-convention work day, the event itself and the post event cleanup. I know that your efforts made the fly in that much more special to all of the attendees in our newly named Fun Fly Zone. Our Chapter was well represented in the Chapter’s tent and the barrel plane was a huge success with families and kids. I hope to provide that experience again next year along with our “old yeller” aircraft as well. A big “THANKS” goes to Ed Haberl for spending a considerable amount of time in that booth. Amy Hoepper informed me that she has to cancel the Prop Roast this year due to more important family responsibilities. We all must keep our personal priorities in perspective. Flying and fly ins are a secondary recreational sport that can always be rescheduled. I’ll keep you all posted on any future plans as I receive them. Page 2 Our next meeting is scheduled for this coming Saturday 8/10/13 at the Hartford Municipal Airport. I’ll start the meeting at 10am if I’m not still in the air at that time. I’ll bring along the coffee and sweet rolls, you bring your Chapter 1 support and some stories to share. We are in need of event sponsors. If you’d like to sponsor a simple Saturday group flying event, let me know. I’ll get it insured and get the word out to our members. Remember, these fly outs usually include a stop for food so sponsoring a lunch or dinner run is a good start. I look forward to hearing from you! Please consider stopping in at our meeting. I’ll be sharing some info on AirVenture 2014 topics along with a few other Chapter related ideas. See you Saturday. EAA AIRVENTURE OSHKOSH 2013 FACTS AND FIGURES Comment from EAA Chairman Jack Pelton: “First, it was a safe AirVenture, which is always our top priority, plus we were blessed with a week of nearly perfect weather. We also met a number of other objectives this year, including reconnecting with our volunteers and members on the grounds, upgrading the food concessions and options, and providing more value and activities throughout the day for attendees. We also had a tremendous amount of aviation innovation brought to Oshkosh.” Attendance: Very comparable to 2012 with more than 500,000 in total estimated attendance Comment from Pelton: “We overcame some big challenges this year, including a lack of current military aircraft participation, to produce an outstanding event. Attractions such as Jetman, the Terrafugia flying car and the screening of Disney’s Planes – which drew a record 15,000 people to the Fly-In Theater – were the most visible draws this year. But people come to Oshkosh for their own individual reasons, and there was a nearly unlimited supply of unique experiences throughout the grounds. We also received reports that many exhibitors had record sales, showing renewed optimism and enthusiasm in the aviation community.” Total aircraft: More than 10,000 aircraft arriving at Wittman Regional Airport in Oshkosh and other airports in eastcentral Wisconsin. Total showplanes: 2,341 – including 867 homebuilt aircraft, 858 vintage airplanes, 343 warbirds, 130 ultralights, 92 seaplanes, 27 aerobatic aircraft and 24 miscellaneous showplanes. Commercial exhibitors: 821 (record total) International visitors registered: 2,115 visitors registered from 64 nations, with Canada (562 visitors), Australia (257), and South Africa (187) the top three nations. (NOTE: This total includes only non-U.S. visitors who register at the International Visitors Tent, so the actual international contingent is undoubtedly larger.) Media: 914 media representatives on-site, from five continents. What’s ahead for 2014? Comment from Pelton: “There are some big aviation anniversaries next year, including the 100th anniversary of the start of World War I and the 75th anniversary of the jet engine. In addition, volunteers will build an airplane in seven days with the ‘One-Week Wonder’ project in which attendees can participate. And, of course, there will be plenty of additions for activities that can happen only at Oshkosh.” Page 4 WANT ADS AIRCRAFT HANGAR FOR SALE PARTS / ACCESSORIES 2005 Zipster Biplane.
