Family Yoga – OGLEBAY’S GOOD ZOO
FALL 2016
What’s better than yoga class? Yoga class at the zoo! Children, of all ages, and parents alike can experience
the benefits of yoga in a fun, natural environment. The animals will be our teachers as we practice animal
asanas (yoga postures) and learn about how ancient yogis modeled their exercise by observing wildlife.
Participants are encouraged to bring their own yoga mat.
Classes are taught by Jomana Papillo, CYT 250, CKYT. She has also trained with Louise Goldberg and
ChildLight Yoga in yoga for special needs children. Classes focus on fun basic yoga poses, breathing
exercises, and relaxation techniques. Classes emphasize creative expression, games, books, music, positive
affirmations and lots of storytelling.
Program Fees: $14 per program Zoo Members (One adult and one child)
$19 per program Non-Member (One adult and one child)

SLEEPING BEARS
Sunday, Sept. 11 @ 2:00pm
Monday, Sept. 12 @ 9:00am
Do bears really hibernate? Did you know that lots of other animals hibernate? By autumn, bats,
chipmunks, frogs, groundhogs, snakes, turtles and wasps are all preparing for their long winter’s nap.
Learn about how these animals forage for food and keep themselves safe. We will visit the zoo’s bear
exhibit and practice walking like they do (Downward-facing Dog Pose or Adho Mukha Svanasana),
making a forest of trees (Tree Pose, or Vriksasana), and creating a group sunflower (Staff pose, or
Dandasana).
DOWN UNDER YOGA
Sunday, Sept. 18 @ 2:00pm
Monday, Sept. 19 @ 9:00am
Can you hop like a kangaroo? Stretch like a dingo? In today’s yoga class,
we will learn about animals from Australia. We will visit the zoo’s
kangaroos and then “fly” to the Outback to explore its wildlife. We will see
an ibis (Dancer’s Pose or Natarjasana), a dingo (One-legged DownwardFacing Dog, or Eka Pada Adho Mukha Svanasana), and an echidna (Child’s Pose, or Balasana).
CAN YOU OUTRUN A CHEETAH?
Sunday, Sept. 25 @ 2:00pm
Can you outrun a cheetah? Come visit the zoo’s cheetah, Taabu, and learn all about why cheetahs
are the fastest land animal on earth. Today we will introduce yogic breath work and go to Africa for a
yoga adventure. We will practice Cat Pose (Marjaryasana), Child’s Pose (Balasana), Standing
Crescent Moon Pose (Indudalasana), and more.
October
FLY LIKE AN EAGLE
Sunday, October 2 @ 2:00pm
Monday, October 3 @ 9:00am
What makes birds so unique compared to other animals? How can a huge bird like a bald eagle fly so
gracefully through the air? Today we will visit the zoo’s wetlands and see a bald eagle. We will learn
about birds while balancing ostrich feathers in Dancer’s Pose (Natarajasana). We will also practice
Eagle Pose (Garudasana), Pigeon Pose (Eka Pada Rajakapotasana), and partner up for “Row, Row,
Row Your Boat” yoga.
IN THE BARNYARD
Sunday, October 16 @ 2:00pm
Monday, October 17 @ 9:00am
Some of the most amazing animals you’ll see are right in your backyard! Today we will visit the zoo’s
barn and learn about life on a farm. We will grow an imaginary garden and learn how to be barn owls,
frogs (Mandukasana Pose), rabbits (Sasangasana Pose) and turtles (Kurmasana Pose). We will also
talk about the importance of gratitude.
HALLOWEEN YOGA!
Sunday, Oct. 30 @ 2:00pm
Monday, Oct. 31 @ 9:00am
It’s Halloween! We will learn about animals that come out at night, as well as some mythical animals
you might only see on Halloween. We will turn the lights out for some yoga fun in the dark, such as
candle gazing, using our night-time senses, and practicing our intuition. We will learn new yoga poses
like Halloween Cat (Marjaryasana), Snake Pose (Bhujangasana), Dragon Pose (Virabadrasana II),
and Unicorn Pose.
November
MOUNTAIN JOURNEY
Sunday, November 6 @ 2:00pm
Monday, November 7 @ 9:00am
Let’s travel to the Himalayan Mountains in Asia where the Red Pandas live! We will learn about what
it takes to be able to live in the cold mountaintops and the adaptations animals need to thrive there.
We will learn Mountain Pose (Tadasana), experience the Web of Connection, and grab up some of
the sun’s powerful energy as we continue to practice our Sun Salutations (Surya Namaskara).
HAVE NO FEAR, MEERKAT IS HERE!
Sunday, November 13 @ 2:00pm
Monday, November 14 @ 9:00am
Did you know meerkats are nature’s best security guards? They always have at least one guard on
duty at all times to watch the “mob,” or meerkat family, and they have six different calls for danger!
We will pretend to be the guards on watch in Meerkat Pose (Virasana) and also practice being
meerkat food (spider pose, cricket pose, snake pose, and dead bug pose!).
