PETER THE GREAT QUIZ OF THE DAY 1 KEY
NAME: ___________________________________
Peter had a fairly rough childhood. Describe his life until the age 17 and
his relationship with his half-sister, Sophia.
Peter’s father died when he was 10. It was decided to make him and his
half-brother Ivan, co-Czars. The problem is that his half-sister Sophia
wanted all the power. She started a rumor that Peter’s relatives had killed
his brother, who woud have been the czar. The Russian secret police, acting on a rumor she started, rounded up all of Peter’s closest relatives and
had them killed by having them thrown onto pikes. Their bodies were
ripped apart and fed to the dogs while Peter was forced to watch. She
didn’t kill him because he had “royal blood.” Anyway, he was able to escape to the country where he learned how build forts, organize and army,
and even have war games with his personal 300 boy army. At the age of
17, when Sophia threatened to kill him, he decided to act. He was able to
knock her out of power and take power for himself. He became the absolute leader of Russia at the age of 17.
What good traits did Peter possess? What would make him a great leader some day?
He had an incredible desire to learn. He got the best teacher and was starving for knowledge. He wanted to
drag Russia out of the Middle Ages, and to do this, he had to bring Russia into the modern ages. He took a
trip in disguise to several European countries where he learned many new things. The most important of these
things was how to build ships. He would use this knowledge to build a Russian navy on his return home.
He was a strong, dynamic leader who was very tall... 6’7” or 8”. He hated to “lose” and wanted himself to be
successful, and his country along with him.
What were some of Peter’s faults? What would make him a bad man some day?
He was a tyrant and a drunk. He was evil to people who opposed him and what he wanted. He would eventually even torture and kill his own son. He was fierce, bad tempered, and often drunk.
