Hanging the Hoberman Sphere You can hang the sphere to make a mobile using the pulley and cord provided. IMPORTANT: Once it has been inserted, the pulley CANNOT be removed. DO NOT insert the pulley unless you are certain that you want to make a hanging mobile. First you must find the special hub on your sphere. Notice that the hubs on the sphere each have two holes — with one exception: there is one special hub that has only one hole. This is where your pulley may be inserted. DIAGRAM A pulley wheel To insert the pulley: Just direct the metal pin into the special hub as shown on Diagram A. Insert the pin until you feel a click. Pull on the pulley to make sure that it is securely attached to the sphere. one-holed upper hub (outer) upper hub (inner) Threading the sphere: Take the string provided and thread it through the pulley (over the wheel) as shown on Diagram B. Take each end of the string and pull it past the hubs into the interior of the sphere. With the sphere in the open position, look down at the pulley, and sight the hub (on the inside of the sphere) that is directly opposite the special pulley hub. Take one end of the string and thread it through one of the two holes of this hub. Tie a thick knot under this hub as shown on Diagram C. DIAGRAM B pulley wheel Take the other end of the string and thread it through the other hole of this same inside bottom hub. Then thread the string through the outer hub that is in line with the inner hub. Tie the plastic ring to the end of this string. Now you are ready to hang your sphere mobile! Take the pulley and, using the hole provided, you can securely attach the sphere to the ceiling, or place it over a hook, so that the sphere hangs in the open position. Pull on the string and watch the sphere contract. Let go of the string and watch it expand. ceiling cord DIAGRAM C bottom hub (inner) knot bottom hub (outer) ring © 1999 Hoberman Designs
