Acadiana Gazette Staff Reports

he American Rosie the Riveter Association is trying to
locate women who worked on
the home front during WWII.
Thousands of women worked
to support the war effort as riveters, welders, electricians, inspectors in plants, ordnance
workers, clerks, and farmers and
also helped to sew clothing and
parachutes for the military-rolled
bandages.
They also performed many
other jobs, such as serving as
volunteer workers collecting
scrap metals and other critical
materials.
Such Historical Value
These women have stories of
their WWII experiences that are
of historical value and perhaps
have never been told.
American Rosie the Riveter
Association would like to acknowledge these women with a
certificate and have their stories
placed in the Archives.

non-profit organization whose

The Cypress Lake Sextet is
composed of UL School of Music jazz faculty: Paul Morton,
trumpet; Michael Jenner, saxophone; Jeff George, guitar; Garth
Alper, keyboard; Chris Munson,
drums; and bassist Robert Nash.
For the past 20 years the Cypress Lake Sextet has been dedicated to the promotion of jazz
on the highest level. The group’s
focus is on original compositions that explore a number of
contemporary jazz styles.
A variety of rhythmic grooves,
they say, keeps the music fresh
and the audience engaged.
In keeping with an important tradition of the jazz
genre, the combo balances
a unique group conception
with improvisatory soloing.
And recent performances have included radio and
World Wide Web broadcasts and concerts in Baton
Rouge, New Orleans, and a
number of other communities throughout Louisiana.
Directed by William
Hochkeppel, the UL Jazz
Ensemble is an 18-piece
“big band” that performs
best in contemporary jazz,
and well as standards made
famous by jazz greats such
as Count Basie, Duke Ellington and Stan Kenton. The group, he said, is
composed of UL music
students who enter the
group through a stringent
audition process.
For more information
about the performance,
contact Paul Morton at the
UL Lafayette School of
Music at [email protected] or (337) 482-5216.
