For the past 20 years the Cypress Lake Sextet has been dedicated to the promotion of jazz on the highest level. The group’s focus is on original compositions that explore a number of contemporary jazz styles. A variety of rhythmic grooves, they say, keeps the music fresh and the audience engaged. In keeping with an important tradition of the jazz genre, the combo balances a unique group conception with improvisatory soloing. And recent performances have included radio and World Wide Web broadcasts and concerts in Baton Rouge, New Orleans, and a number of other communities throughout Louisiana. Directed by William Hochkeppel, the UL Jazz Ensemble is an 18-piece “big band” that performs best in contemporary jazz, and well as standards made famous by jazz greats such as Count Basie, Duke Ellington and Stan Kenton. The group, he said, is composed of UL music students who enter the group through a stringent audition process.
