COUNCILLOR REPORT – OCTOBER, 2016
I want to share funding that will be available for small businesses in
the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo
Up to $20,000 per eligible business
Eligible small business owners, sole
proprietors, and trades people in the
Regional Municipality of Wood
Buffalo could receive modest
financial support of up to $20,000 in
a phased approach. This could assist
with things such as uninsured losses; deductibles; minor
repairs; equipment; and occupational training expenses.
Phase 2: Financial assistance up to $8,000 to eligible
businesses.
Please note, the determination of the amount provided to
eligible businesses will be based on need and will be
assessed on a case-by-case basis. Further details
regarding how businesses may be eligible to apply are in
the process of being finalized.
Phase 3: Financial assistance up to $11,000
Businesses receiving financial assistance within Phase 2
could receive further financial assistance for occupational
training and additional requirements, to be determined as
outlined below.
Eligibility and Allocation of Fund
Eligibility and the amount of financial assistance provided
will be determined on a case-by-case basis following
careful assessment of each application and accompanying
supporting documentation. The amount of money
provided to each recipient within each phase will be a
portion of the eligible costs incurred after May 3, 2016, up
to the above mentioned maximums.
For current information:
www.redcross.ca/AlbertaFireBuisness
Please check the website for updates. Eligibility criteria
will be posted soon.
I am pleased that the Economic Development Department
at the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo was out to
the Conklin Tradeshow in September to provide local
business owners and residents with information.
Economic Development is planning more meetings with
the rural local businesses to keep them updated on
funding and resources available.
The Willow Lake Community Association
is having a meeting on October 17, 2016.
The WLCA had their annual general
meeting in September.
In talking to the Director of Procurement
at the Regional Municipality of Wood
Buffalo there has been some progress on
the Conklin multi-plex.
Atco is busy moving the light poles at
Gregoire Lake Estates to make room for
the lines for water and sewer. After this
project is finished, there are plans to
repair the roads. I met with Wade
Chouinard, the representative from
Gregoire Lake Estates on the WLCA
board and the RMWB to discuss the place
making. Concerns were raised about the
fencing around the playground. It is my
understanding that the place making will
be completed by winter. A resident
complimented the place making that has
taken place around the mail boxes.
There are plans to put streetlights on the
Willow Lake road in Anzac before winter.
I attended the Traditional Celebration of
Achievement in September. The event
was to honor all the Aboriginal youth in
the Regional Municipality of Wood
Buffalo who graduated from Grade 12. I
really enjoy these events. The VicePresident of the Metis Local 1935
explained to me that the number of
Grade 12 graduates has risen dramatically
since the inception of the Traditional
Celebration of Achievement. There was
also some great entertainment by the
fiddlers. Tyson Adby led the young
jiggers. They did a fantastic job.
For any good deeds or concerns please
call 780-334-0516 or e-mail

NEWS RELEASE
October 2016
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
UPDATE: Municipal Landfill Process for Commercial Waste Haulers
(Fort McMurray, AB – September 28, 2016) – Following the successful demolition clean-up, the Municipal
Landfill’s hours of operations for commercial haulers are being scaled back, effective Friday, September 30, 2016.
Tomorrow, Thursday, September 29, 2016 will be the last night the landfill will operate through the evening and will
then be open daily from 8 a.m. – 8 p.m. for both residents and commercial haulers.
The Municipality has reduced the landfill’s hours to reflect the reduced amount of daily incoming commercial haul
traffic after 8 p.m. The Municipality also reports that demolition clean-up by SPECS is on schedule to meet the
September 30 deadline. As of September 27, 2016, 548 demolition inspections have been completed.
Tipping fees continue to be waived for residential household waste until October 31, 2016, while commercial haulers
are required to follow the landfill weigh scale requirements below.
Landfill Weigh Scale Requirements
a. A Fort McMurray Business License is required to set up an account for landfill use. This must be done in
person at Timberlea landing.
For more information about the new business licensing process, please visit rmwb.ca/businesslicensing or

Each vehicle must be registered. Weights cannot be used on other vehicles even if they are the same type
and the same truck must haul the same trailer. Be sure to notify the scale house of any changes as then a new
registration will be needed including a weigh-in and weigh-out.
If a ticket is required on the stored rate, the driver must request it at the time of entry or will need to come
back for it prior to leaving.
There is no stopping past the scales or on roadways.
There is no third party billing.
Drivers must obey road signage, traffic lights and flag people while arriving, using or leaving the landfill.
Drivers should clearly state the load they are carrying.
Out-of-town haulers must have a clean and visible non-resident sticker applied to their driver side window
or door for scale house cashiers to see.
Vehicles NOT permitted in the landfill cell for safety reasons are end dumps, trucks and wagons, trucks and
pups or side dumps. Vehicles PERMITTED at the landfill are tandem gravel trucks, roll-off trucks and bins,
and live bottom trailers.
After dumping their load, registered trucks and trailers can exit the landfill, via the main scale house, to get
onto Highway 63.
For more information on the RMWB scalehouse process and landfill requirements,
contact: [email protected]
