The Art of Handmade Paper - Deckle and Mold Diagram
Canvass stretchers or 1” x 1” strips of wood (10 x 9 and/or 9 X 8 and/or 8 X 8)
Make sure if using a picture frame it is flat not curved molding.
Put canvas stretchers or pieces of wood like diagram.
Use waterproof glue to assemble.
If building own frame nail together
as shown. Seal with acrylic varnish or
urethane (spray or paint on). Dry before
putting screen on.
Cut fiberglass screen larger than frame.
Staple along one edge.
Pull/stretch screen taut and staple across from first edge.
Then staple remaining two edges.
Once screen is securely attached and taut, cover the edges
of the wood and staples with duct tape.
Deckle: The removable frame which rests on top of the mold to hold the pulp and define
the edge of the sheet.
Deckle edge: The uneven, feathery edge created by the deckle, which distinguishes a
sheet of handmade paper.
Mold: The basic tool of hand papering. A rectangular wooden frame, covered with a sievelike laid or woven wire surface, used for sheet forming in papermaking.
