WHY DO WHALE PINGERS WORK?
Baleen whales (including Humpbacks) do not use sonar to
help them navigate and hunt for food. They rely on hearing.
Future Oceans whale Pingers emit a 3kHz signal, the best
known middle hearing range of Humpbacks. The Pinger
signal alerts whales to the presence of gill and purse seine
nets that the Pingers are attached to. Future Oceans whale
Pingers do not harass or harm whales in any way.
PINGER ATTACHMENT INSTRUCTIONS
Cut two pieces approx 18” of low stretch twine (gangion twine
works well). Insert twine into end hole in Pinger casing. Push
twine out of side hole.
How many Pingers do I need on my net?
We recommend spacing the whale pingers every
50 meters / 150 feet / 25 fathoms.
How do pingers operate?
Two water contact switches turn the Pingers on once they
are immersed in water and the Pingers stop operating
automatically when the water contacts are dry.
GILL NETS – PINGER DEPLOYMENT
How long do the batteries last?
Minimum 120 days based on 12 hours soak per day.
Pinger spacing: 50 meters / 150 feet / 25 fathoms.
Tie a figure 8 stop knot in the end of the twine with minimum
tail. Pull figure 8 knot tight
Where do I get replacement batteries?
Our resellers stock batteries or visit futureoceans.com.
Please do not dump batteries irresponsibly.
How do I change batteries?
Unscrew the two ends of the Pinger and slide out the
battery tray which houses the battery, remove the battery
and replace it. Always change batteries in a dry environment.

Whales, Porpoises, and Dolphins avoid the net with Pingers
deployed. They pass the net unharmed and fishing continues
uninterrupted and your net remains intact.
PURSE SEINE – PINGER DEPLOYMENT
Pinger spacing: 50 meters / 150 feet / 25 fathoms.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Pull figure 8 knot tight inside Pinger casing. Clip tail if it
protrudes outside of Pinger casing. This offers a smooth
non-fouling twine connection to Pinger. Repeat twine
attachment procedure on other end of pinger.
Do Pingers work on all gear?
Yes, provided spacing requirements are met and you are
using the right Pinger for the right species, the Pingers
will alert the marine mammals to whatever gear they are
deployed on including gill-nets, set nets, purse seines, and
line & pot gear. In fact any infrastructure/gear that might
accidentally entangle Porpoises, Dolphins or Whales
should be fitted with the appropriate pinger for the species.
Do they come with a warranty?
Yes, We offer a conditional 12 month warranty on our
Pinger products. Future Ocean batteries must be used to
comply with warranty. Receipt showing purchase date
must be submitted with each warranty claim.
Do Pingers scare fish?
No, all major scientific trials using Pingers over the past
20 years shows that Pingers have no effect on fish.
PREVENT EXPENSIVE
GEAR DAMAGE!
Using a fid, pull twine through the weedline or headline. Pull
Pinger tight to weedline or headline. Tie a clove hitch around
the line, followed by a few half hitches pulled tight, then slide
the twine tail inside the weedline or headline to provide a
smooth surface or tape. Tie the other side the same keeping
the weedline or headline as tight as possible to the Pinger.
