Let Barnaby Bear guide your children through the early stages of understanding local geography with this inspiring new title starring the BBC bear from Chester! With five interactive area types to explore, each with a focused geographical theme, children learn about features and terms associated with local studies. Helping Barnaby Bear to navigate each location develops early mapping skills, with map progression building in complexity from a basic pictorial map, to a simplified OS-style map. Compass point progression builds from four to eight points. The camera and scrapbook tools enable pupils to take, store, and annotate photos, encouraging them to carefully observe and describe what they are seeing. Photos can be taken in response to the program's three modes of use; Find, Task or Explore, designed to allow flexibility in adapting the learning focus as appropriate. Educational Objectives O O To introduce maps and compass points To develop geographical knowledge about the features of local areas and environments O To encourage use of secondary sources O To build knowledge of geographical terms and vocabulary O To encourage expression of views and opinions relating to geographical themes The Three Modes of Use Find Mode In Find mode children are presented with a list of six objects once they select a map. They must then locate and photograph each object, a process that strengthens their awareness of the key features of the locations they visit. Task Mode In Task mode children navigate around the maps with the objective of completing the tasks set by Barnaby. Along the way, children learn about the many features of the local areas they visit. The mode can be run at either Easy or Hard level with the tasks tailored to suit the difficulty. Task mode encourages children to develop opinions about local geography, and is potentially more challenging than Find mode. Explore Mode In Explore mode there are no pre-set tasks. Instead, teachers have the option to set their own tasks by using the Explore focus feature in the Teacher Options. By entering text into this feature, teachers can display their own tasks in the Task list when the program is run in Explore mode. 4 5 BB Walkabouts UG v7.qxp 20/12/2005 14:49 Page 6 SHERSTON How do I install BBC Barnaby Bear’s Local Walkabouts? The BBC Barnaby Bear’s Local Walkabouts CD-ROM has been created to provide teachers and pupils with an educationally sound geographical resource. It can be used either in conjunction with other Barnaby Bear resources from the respected BBC series, or independently, as an integral part of a teaching approach. Designed to develop a growing geographical awareness in younger pupils the CD-ROM develops their skills in: The contents page of each pupil scrapbook contains a scrollable menu, listing all scrapbook pages. Clicking on a title will open that page. Alternatively, the Paw Print button can be used to scroll through the entire scrapbook. O Observing and recording O Using geographical vocabulary O Developing fieldwork skills O Using maps O Using secondary sources of information O Individual scrapbook pages can be printed once opened. An entire pupil scrapbook can be printed by selecting the Print Whole Scrapbook button on the contents page. O Describing places in terms of what they are like and where they are Recognising change Awareness of environmental issues such as improvement Designed for children aged five to seven, the CD-ROM supports a variety of teaching and learning styles: O Whole Class The five different geographical areas and their interactive photographs offer a range of opportunities for class discussions. Discussions might take on a geographical skills focus where aspects of using a map, compass points and general navigation and route planning skills may be explored. The map and compass progression built into the five scenarios provides teachers with an ideal vehicle and stimulus for such work. 26 27 BB Walkabouts UG v7.qxp 20/12/2005 14:50 Page 28 B B C B A R N A BY B E A R’ S LO C A L WA L K A B O U T S SHERSTON Alternatively, discussion might centre on geographical themes and developing awareness of aspects of both physical and human geography. The five areas covered on the CD-ROM have been carefully selected to facilitate such work, and the photographs and tasks presented in Task mode provide themed-based foci that can be used effectively as discussion prompts in a whole-class or group context, using a whiteboard or a large monitor. Group Work Working in groups on the activities promotes the use of geographical language as children explore new concepts together. Individual Work Find Mode: A picture-based task with a focus on observing and recording features, and developing map and navigation skills. Task Mode (easy): A themed based approach to learning about local areas, with a single straight-forward task. Map and navigation skills are also developed. Task Mode (hard): As above, but the task is split into two parts and requires more application of thought and interpretation Explore Mode: A flexible mode that allows the teacher to set their own tasks. This flexibility makes it easy for teachers to apply differentiation by task and for pupils of a range of abilities to use the CD-ROM. BBC Barnaby Bear's Local Walkabouts is also fully narrated, with all narration available on demand. The result is a resource that enables individuals to work independently to reinforce key geographical skills, knowledge and understanding. The creation of a scrapbook for each child, allows children to show their level of knowledge and understanding by the quality of the text that they enter under the photographs that they have taken. 28 Further Ideas for Geography By the time they go to school, young children will have already acquired a certain amount of geographical knowledge about the place they live. BBC Barnaby Bear's Local Walkabouts aims to build upon and extend these experiences by providing computerbased opportunities for pupils to develop their geographical skills and knowledge in a way that can then be applied to practical fieldwork in and around their local area. However, getting out into the 'field' is an important part of geography, at all levels, and this CD-ROM is not designed to replace such work, but to support and enhance it. Some of the ideas below are suitable for classroom-based work; others are intended to be carried out outside of the classroom. Use the Barnaby Bear Tasks as the stimulus for local area work O Using digital cameras pupils can take photographs of the local area O O When the photos have been printed out, pupils can annotate them and add notes below them Pupils can use their annotated photograph to produce real geography scrapbooks into which they could stick printouts of their Barnaby Bear scrapbook pages Street trail Plan a short walk in the local vicinity and mark key places/features on a simple sketch map. As pupils go round the route ask them to keep an eye on their position on the map and look out for the places you have marked - they could be asked to number or label them. At junctions, ask them which direction they need to turn, eg left/right, or use simple compass points if there is a compass on the map. 29 BB Walkabouts UG v7.qxp 20/12/2005 14:50 Page 30 B B C B A R N A BY B E A R’ S LO C A L WA L K A B O U T S SHERSTON Looking at photographs Give pupils a selection of photographs of different types of area (local or contrasting) and ask them to: O O Discuss what they show Select two that they found most interesting and ask them to record: - Any features they recognise What they think the type of area is What they like/dislike about the area Where they might find such an area What evidence there is of people using/living in the area - What sorts of things might change over time these places to the other, marking on as much detail as possible eg human features such as buildings etc., and physical features such trees etc. The pupils could then be asked to describe the route making reference to the features that might be seen if the route was followed. Our Local area Draw a large-scale map of the local area and get children to identify where key places and features might be found e.g. school, church, bus stop etc. Once the map is finished, ask the pupils to think about what sort of impression this gives them of their local area eg is it built up? Are there lots of things for children to do? Is it safe or are there dangers such as roads, railways etc? A Local walkabout Take children on a walk around the local area with a focus of finding out what the different buildings and places are. Before, during or after the walk encourage children to learn and use appropriate geographical vocabulary eg building, street, road, car park, path etc. Matching places and labels Take photos of some local areas and make labels for each place including: name of place, description of place (geographical vocabulary), what the place is used for etc and then get children to work in groups to match the correct labels to the photographs. Map making Ask pupils to make a map showing two local places eg school and park. Ask them then to draw the route to get from one of 30 31 BB Walkabouts UG v7.qxp 20/12/2005 14:50 Page 32 SHERSTON B B C B A R N A BY B E A R’ S LO C A L WA L K A B O U T S Technical Information and Tips Performance Problems Sherston has built its reputation upon the quality of its software and support and is always happy to advise users on any aspects of its software and the computers it runs on. Record keeping problems Problems with record keeping (storing of pupil names or program settings etc) can normally be attributed to the following reason: Insufficient Permissions granted to the Saves folder When you install BBC Barnaby Bear’s Local Walkabouts, a Saves folder is created. This is the area where pupil names and scores and general program settings are stored. Users must have full access permissions (they must be able to read and write) to this folder for record keeping to be available. Normally you would need to have Administrator privileges to alter the permissions on this folder. You may need to contact your IT Support if you are not sure how to do this. Some systems may not allow you to alter the permissions on the Saves folder (perhaps because you have an additional level of security provided by your computer supplier or you have installed third-party software that controls desktop security). In this case, you will need to identify an area on your computer system that users have full access to (they can read and write). Use the Full installation option to install the program, specifying the destination of the Saves folder as your read/write area. 32 33 BB Walkabouts UG v7.qxp 20/12/2005 14:50 SHERSTON Index Apple Mac Users . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .9 Installation . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .10 Recommended Requirements . . . . . . . .11 Camera tool . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .23 Compass controller . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .21 Educational Objectives . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .5 Explore mode . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .5,14,28 Filmstrip . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .24 Find mode . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .5 Finishing a scenario . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .24 Forest . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .17 Introduction . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .4 Login . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .13 Maps . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .5 Navigation . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .21 Park . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .16 Photographs . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .30 Pupil Records . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .15 Scrapbook . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .25 Seaside . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .19 Suggestions for Classroom Use . . . . . . . .27 Task mode . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .28 Teacher Options . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .14 Three Modes of Use . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .5 Town . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .20 Village . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .18 Windows PC Users . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .6 Installation . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .7 Recommended Requirements . . . . . . . . .8 34 Page 34
