2nd Workshop on Chest Wall Deformities

This 2nd Workshop on Chest Wall Deformities was take place at the University
Hospital of Saint Etienne, France on October 17-18 2013. The workshop was organized by
the cooperation of both: Dr. Manuel LOPEZ Department of Pediatric Surgery and Pr. Olivier
TIFFET, Department of General & Thoracic Surgery of the University Hospital of Saint
Etienne, France. More than 100 specialists from 26 countries attended this workshop. Fifty
percent of them were thoracic surgeon and the rest pediatric surgeons. We were very happy
to see the increasing interest on Chest Wall Deformities.
On this occasion, we had the privilege to welcome international experts as our guests
of honor who revolution the treatment of chest wall deformities by minimal invasive
techniques and who counts with the largest series in the treatment of chest wall
deformities. The most important international innovators in this field were present at the
event.
An intensive two-day course with active participation of Donald NUSS from USA,
Hyung Joo PARK from Seoul Korea, Marcelo MARTINEZ FERRO from Argentina, Mustafa
YUKSEL from Turkey, Patricio VARELA from Chile, Frank Martin HAECKER from
Switzerland, Carlos BARDAJI from Spain, Jean Marie WIHLM from France. Our guests
performed “Live Surgeries” in both Pectus Excavatum and Carinatum. The first day was
dedicated to the treatment of PE and the second day was dedicated to the treatment of PC
and atypical forms including” live surgery”.
We started the day before workshop with the presentation of the scheduled surgeries and
followed by examinations.
At the end of the day, we concluded with dinner to welcome our guest of honors and some
participants.
The First day, three lives surgeries were performed and Marcelo Martinez Ferro was our
moderator during the lives surgeries.
The first case was a patient 17 years-old with atypical chest wall deformity “PE&PC complex
who was performed by Pr. Jean Marie WIHLM from France (Ravitch procedure)
The second case was patient 26 years-old with Asymmetric PE, who was performed by Pr.
Donald Nuss.
The Third Case was a patient 14 years –old with Symmetric PE (deep focal) Performed by
Pr. Hyung Joo Park and who used by the first time his park’s devices in Europe.
In the second part of the day our guest of Honors held the following lectures:
- The Important technical aspects of minimally invasive PE repair. Pr. Donald Nuss
- Ravitch procedure & modifications. Place in the modern era. Pr. Jean Marie Wihlm
- Tricks and recommendations to avoid complications in Nuss procedure. Pr. Marcelo
Martinez-Ferro.
- Classifications on Chest Wall Deformities. Pr. Hyung Joo Park.
- Vacuum Bell. Non operative treatment in PE. Pr. Frank-Martin Haecker.
-New Technique in PE “ Extrathoracic Thoracoplasty” and Esternal pull-up trick, during Nuss
Procedure in severe cases. Pr. Carlos Bardaji Pascual.
This Intense journey was finished with our Gala Dinner at the Saint Etienne Stadium. The
Most successful club in French Soccer History. With a lecture of Pr. Mustafa Yuksel, of
History of CWIG.
The Second- day was dedicated to Pectus Carinatum and Atypical forms. Two lives surgeries
were performed.
The first case was a young male 17 years-old with Unilateral PC. A combined approach by
Cartilage resection by thoracoscopy and mini-open approach was performed by Pr. Patricio
VARELA.
The Second case was a young male 15 years-old with Symmetric PC. Abramson procedure
was performed by Pr. Mustafa Yuksel.
In the second part of the day our guest of Honors held the following lectures:
-The Seoul experience of minimal invasive surgery for PE. Pr. Hyung Joo Park
-Technical aspect of Abramson Procedure. Pr. Mustafa Yuksel.
-Paradigm in PC. From invasion to not aggression: Dynamic Compression System.

-Pectus Carinatum ot Complex deformity repair: The Press-Mold Technique.

-Currarino Silverman. Update. Pr. Patricio Varela.
-Complications and Counter-Mesures. Pr. Hyung Joo Park
-The Next Generation Technique and Devices for Pectus Repair. Pr. Hyung Joo Park.
At the end of the day, we concluded our 2nd Workshop on Chest Wall Deformities with
Faculty Dinner to thanks our guest of honors.
