her hockey career. She continuously wants to learn and explore new areas. From early on in her
life Joosje has found it important to develop different skills
Her clubs and teams
Joosje has played at two field hockey clubs in the Netherlands. From age 7 to 13 at Huizer
Hockey Club and then at Gooische Hockey Club, where she currently plays in the A1 team.
The Huizer Hockey Club is in the town of Huizen. It has a strong youth development track, and
from an early age kids train frequently with attention to base technical hockey skills. Initially
placed in the lowest girls team, within four years Joosje had worked her way up to the C1 team.
During her first year in this team, they came second place in the National indoor hockey finals,

trainer of hockey and football and speed training within these sports. At Huizer Hockey Club
Joosje had several other very professional coaches who paid great attention to personal
development.

Position in the team:
In recent years Joosje has developed her position as a defender. She is especially strong in a
central back-sweeper position, however is an all-round player that adds value to different
positions. Another area of specialization is the set-up of the penalty corner. She can consistently
pass balls straight and fast to the area at the circle edge where the ball is stopped and shot or
pushed. Sometimes she scores goals herself through a tip-in when she gets the ball back from
her set-up. Joosje is also able to shoot or push the penalty corner herself.
In the defensive tasks of the penalty corner Joosje can play different roles. Her specialty is
stopping balls at the goal line, which she has done multiple times. Furthermore, Joosje often
takes free hits for the team during the play. She has good control of the ball, a great passing
technique, and a strong tactical insight. In the field she can lead by example and coach her fellow
teammates. When given tactical instructions by her coach she quickly absorbs the information
and executes the moves during the match.
School
Joosje is attending the highest level school in the Netherlands (Gymnasium). Her school in
Hilversum belongs to one of the three best in the province. She currently follows the following
subjects: English, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Netherlands, Latin, Chinese,
Economics and Physical Education.
Joosje is achieving many good grades and is one of the top-10 students in her class.
Driven by her interest in sports and sciences, she chose to do her mandatory internship with the
faculty of Movement Sciences at the Free University in Amsterdam. During her project she
supported research to help baseball pitchers to improve their pitch whilst staying free of physical
complications.
Joosje is expected to obtain her Gymnasium high school degree in June 2017 and subsequently
wants to continue her education in the US.
Other Information
Joosje had been involved in training other kids on the hockey field and this has taught her a lot
about communication and how to transfer her hockey experience to others. Furthermore, she
obtained her diploma as a hockey referee.
In addition to hockey, Joosje is also passionate about tennis, skiing and surfing. She likes trying
many different sports and always enjoys new physical and intellectual challenges.
Next to her busy life at school and sports, she also wants to contribute to society, for instance,
she has been helping out at a retirement home. At her school Joosje has been asked to join the
Sports Commission, which organizes various tournaments and stimulates kids to play sports.
Joosje and her colleagues in this commission are investing significant time and energy in this
work whilst having a lot of fun.
Over the last few years Joosje has invested a lot of time in exercises to further increase her
endurance and strength. She regularly spends time doing running exercises (shuttles) and
muscle strength and stability exercises (Core Stability, including push-ups, planking, sit-ups).
Joosje is very motivated to combine hockey and studying at a US college / university, because
she wants to spend more of her life back in the USA. It would be great for her to go back and
realize her passion for hockey in a society that is so sports-minded. Joosje has not yet decided
on the exact study subjects that she wants to follow, but is interested in science and wants to
get started by obtaining a broad academic knowledge base. She aims to spend several years in
the US in order to complete a study, to be successful in hockey and make new friends .
