Dear Friends,
Calendar of Events
This morning I watched a clip taken from the Blessing of the
Animals at
The Cathedral of St. John the Divine in NYC this past Sunday. The
first Sunday of October now reminds us and helps us celebrate the
love of animals we attribute to St. Francis. Just saying . . . they had
a few more animals to bless than did we. Several species of goats,
rabbits galore, a spectacular chicken, a calm service dog, a white
goose, ducks, a tortoise that had to be a century old, a boa
constrictor, an owl, a cat that was carefully tucked in a carrier, a
cockatoo, an owl, and yes, even a camel! No surprise that the
acolyte that followed this grand procession was waving incense like
crazy.

I also noticed Monday’s headline in the Spokesman-Review
heralded a picture of a choir member straddling his choir book in
one hand and a white poodle with the other as he moved around the
corner of the altar at our own St. John’s Cathedral. The by-line that
went above the picture summed up the spirit of the day city wide
very well: “It’s my feeling that if they didn’t have pets in heaven, I
wouldn’t go,” spoken by Carolyn Casey, who brought her 4-yearold goldendoodle to another venue, St. Mark’s Lutheran Church.
Granted, our own version of the Blessing of the Animals on Sunday
was a little more circumspect than the first. We had one beautiful
cat and the rest were well-behaved dogs, one of which added some
beautiful noises to the Lord during two of the hymns. In the picture
,on page 2 of the Resurrection Review, you checking each other out
and evidently finding the other quite acceptable.
I noticed abundant smiles as we worshipped together Sunday.
Animals are indeed God’s gift that brings comfort and joy. They
make prayer a little easier because they make us happy (among
other things). Sometimes as I struggle with the quiet time of my

my morning prayer I get a little antsy to finish so I can
go pick up our neighbor’s dog for our morning walk.
“Mr. Barnsley” is always ready to meet the same trail
with his tail waving like a flag, meeting the day as if he
has never been so absorbed or so happy. Seems like
the essence of prayer to me!

Sunday Market
As you plan your fall schedule, please keep
November 20th in mind. I hope that you
will have some things to donate. Jams, jellies,
other canned items White Elephant items (very popular last
fall!) Hand crafted items, knitted, quilted, crocheted,
wreaths, holiday items Baked yummies and candies etc.
Last year we made hundreds of dollars from the sale and
we were able to pay for changes in the lighting, new energy
efficient bulbs, etc. Besides that, I think it is a lot of fun!

Gardeners
I need some input/suggestions concerning Saturday
apple cider pressing. Weather for Saturday is for rain
ending in the afternoon. I'm thinking about these
options; 1 The event can be moved to the afternoon
with canopies set up over the work area, 2 Pick
apples and store them in the garden shed and wait
for better weather, 3 Cancel the event.
The apples need to be picked soon, as
they are falling off the trees. Let me
know what you think so plans can be
made. Thanks. Tim
