From The Desk of The Reverend Elizabeth W. Colton
Welcome to All Saints!
I hope anyone reading the All
Saints’ newsletter for the first time will have as warm a
welcome as The Rev. Lori Exley and I have had since our
beginning on April 1. In just a few busy weeks at the holiest
time in our church calendar, we are mostly settled in and
functioning. As I work in my office I am continually amazed at the traffic coming in and
out of the building. People are busy working on all kinds of projects. Lori and I have had
a chance to attend some of the committee meetings, which helps us understand how the
systems work. People have shared ideas and excitement with us. The love and dedication
to All Saints is inspirational!
And we arrived just in time to walk to Jerusalem with you, and to experience God’s raising
of Jesus from the dead. And now we go forward in the season of Eastertide, singing the
great Easter hymns and hearing the stories of Jesus’ activity before his ascension. What
has it meant to you this year? Did it feel different? Phillips Brooks (who wrote O Little
Town of Bethlehem and was rector of Holy Trinity Church in Rittenhouse Square) once
said, “Let every man and woman count himself immortal. Let him catch the revelation of
Jesus in his resurrection. Let him say, not merely, ‘Christ is risen,’ but, ‘I also shall rise!’”
This Good News is personal! Death has been defeated and we too will come to share in
this glorious act of God’s never-ending grace, lovingkindness and complete upset of the
laws of nature.
So let’s move ahead as an Easter people. We have Good News to share!
Faithfully,
Liz
Interim Tasks
The five Focus Points for Interim Ministry are Heritage, Leadership, Mission,
Connections and Future. Let’s consider one a month. This month: Heritage!
History is part of heritage, and All Saints has a long and distinguished history.
Only this past week the History Committee met and planned some cemetery tours,
a presence at a local history fair on May 20th, and checked on arrangements for
the Memorial Day commemoration. History is well respected at All Saints!
But history is a part of each individual’s story as well. Many of you have been here
for decades, and have fond and vivid memories. Hearing these stories is important,
so we will be planning some gatherings for the future when people can tell their
stories. Everyone has a piece of the puzzle, so when we all get together we get an
important picture of All Saints, and this will only help as the parish plans for calling
its next rector. Looking back helps you understand what has been important to
you, and gives opportunity to decide if those things are still important, or whether
new times bring new needs.
Duffield Family Cemetery Tour
Sunday, May 7 at 11:45 a.m.
The History Committee is ready to take the members of All
Saints’ through time spanning 200 years of the Duffield
family history starting from the mid 1700's, through the
Revolutionary War and Civil War, and up to 1949. The
Duffield story is a fascinating one, so come and see! This
tour is not a walking tour. The only walking you will do is mostly on paved paths
and some flat ground surfaces to get to the gravesite. Please wear comfortable
shoes and sun protection and don't forget to bring your lawn chair and bottled
water. The tour is approximately 1 hour and only for members of All Saints’.
The same tour will be open to the public on Friday, June 16th @ 7 pm. If you can't
make the May 7th tour, this is your last chance to see this one.
*In the event of inclement weather, tours will be cancelled.

THE MANY LANGUAGES OF PENTECOST - JUNE 4
Pentecost is the birthday of the church, and the celebration of the gift of the Holy
Spirit, which completes the Trinity. On Pentecost, we always read the story of how
it all happened in Acts 2:1-21. You will remember that Jews were gathered in
Jerusalem from every nation, gathered for a festival, when the tongues of fire and
the great wind descended upon them. And suddenly, the people were able to hear
the words being spoken as if in their own language. Some people suggest that this
is a reversal of the Tower of Babel (Genesis 11: 1-9) when God caused the
confusion of many languages. At that time, the difficult children of Israel had
decided to try to be like God and build a tower so high that it would reach to
heaven. God caused the confusion to thwart their plans. (Hence our English word:
babble!)
It’s fun to recreate this Pentecost event with many languages, by reading the Acts
passage in as many languages as possible at the same time. Our lay reader will
read as usual in English, and then we invite others to join for the last few
sentences. It gives us a feel for what it was like!
So, calling all foreign language speakers! Liz can provide the text in the language
of your choice. And you don’t have to worry if it isn’t perfect because everyone
will be reading at the same time! No one will notice your pronunciation in the midst
of the babble! Please contact Liz to let her know what language you could read!

On Saturday May 20th, 10 to 3:00 p.m., All Saints’ will have a table set up at
the Holy Family University, Campus Center Building. Free Admission, historic
displays, books, prints available for purchase and presentations on local history.
Email questions to: [email protected]
This event is a great opportunity for parishioners to learn more about the history
of Northeast Philadelphia. So much of this history has been untold and unseen.
It’s an opportunity for the community to interact with various local organizations
which have devoted so much time and energy to uncovering and preserving the
history of our neighborhoods.
ANNOUNCEMENTS
Let us remember our part in stewardship and being grateful,
responsible stewards of the gifts we receive from God. The
tradition of giving back to God and to the church comes from
the Biblical practice of “tithing,” which means to give back a
tenth of our earnings to God (Numbers 18:26). The Episcopal
Church sees stewardship as more than simply contributing
money to the church; it’s also about contributing time and talents, and
volunteering for ministry and mission. It’s about reaching out to build relationships
from a perspective of abundance instead of scarcity. Please see anyone on the
Vestry, Liz Colton, or Lori Exley if you’re interested in being an integral part of
keeping our parish thriving and plentiful!

POLICEMAN’S PRAYER
K-9’S PRAYER
When I start my tour of duty God.
Wherever crime may be.
As I walk the darkened streets alone,
Let me be close to thee.
Please give me understanding
With both the young and old.
Let me listen with attention
Until their stories told.
Let me never make a judgment
In a rash or callous way,
But let me hold my patience
Let each man have his say.
Lord if some dark and dreary night,
I must give my life,
Lord, with your everlasting love
Protect me child and wife.
I will lay down my life for you
And expect nothing but love in return.
I protect my officer with my life,
And would gladly take a bullet in his place.
I am sent in to find lost children and
fugitives on the run.
I find drugs and weapons and even bombs.
I am the first sent in and sometimes the
last to leave.
I am the nose and ears of my officer.
I will protect him.
I would die for him and you.
I only ask for compassion and a kind word.

All Saints’ is one of the historic spots that can be
visited off the river walk trail. How cool is that?!
It reads: “Constructed in 1854-55 to replace an
original 1772 structure, this church represents the
work of Frank Wills, a noted architect of the Gothic
Revival style.”
Just a few random photos of Members are highlighted paying tribute to their dedication
and loyalty to their parish. And most are still very active with the church and it stands
testiment to their stewardship. But really, check out some of these hairdos!
