MUSICAL TOUR OF NEW YORK CITY
December 17-23, 2016, immediately following exam week.

Performances:
 New York City Ballet’s Nutcracker, with choreography by George
Balanchine: so many beautiful dancers, so many magical sets and the one-ton
Christmas tree that no one can ever forget.
 The Broadway musical Cats, Andrew Lloyd Webber’s wonderful, fanciful
show, winner of 7 Tony Awards! Plus we may have a Post-Show Discussion
with cast members.
 Verdi’s dramatic, symbolic Nabucco at the Metropolitan Opera House,
starring Plácido Domingo and conducted by James Levine.
 Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Big Band Holiday show with Wynton Marsalis and
the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra.
 Handel’s Messiah at Carnegie Hall with Musica Sacre, New York’s leading
professional chorus.
 The Radio City Music Hall Christmas Spectacular, starring the worldfamous Rockettes and their signature eye-high kicks and precision
choreography, a NY Christmas tradition which has dazzled for over 75 years
Tours (subject to availability):
• A guided backstage tour of the Metropolitan Opera House.
• A guided tour of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, focusing on art inspired
by music, theatre, and dance, plus time to explore the entire museum.
• A guided tour of the Steinway and Sons piano factory.
• A tour of historic Carnegie Hall.

A wonderful group dinner on Times Square.
Optional:
Ice skate at Rockefeller Center, go to the top of the Empire State Building or the
Statue of Liberty, see another Broadway show or opera, visit the Museum of
Modern Art, or do any of the other things visitors to NYC have available. Free
time has been built into the schedule for you.

A deposit of $500 is due by October 1.
50% of your remaining balance is due October 14. The rest of balance is due November 11. All
funds are non-refundable unless we can replace you or get refunds for you from the airline,
concert venues, etc.
The 3-to-a-room or 4-to-a-room discounts are available if you have roommates committed. Dr.
Griffith will try to match you with others if you request it, but that cannot be guaranteed.
Not covered:
 Most meals. Our hotel is in easy walking distance of fast food, a coffee shop, a market, a
deli, etc., and has its own food court. One can eat cheaply or elegantly in New York. You
choose.
 Extra sightseeing or shows on your own.
 United Airlines checked baggage fees.
 $31 for a week’s subway pass. If you prefer, cabs are easy to hail in NY.
Course Credit
is available under MUSIC 4990, Special Topics, 2 credits, pass/fail.
Credits are for Winter Session, not part of your fall load.
Preview lectures from Dr. Griffith in the days prior to departure are
required for credit.
New York in December is so beautiful, with holiday displays in the store windows,
the famous tree at Rockefeller Center, and decorations everywhere. You won’t want to
