There will be a college bus leaving the Columbus Campus at 8 a.m. Sit back and enjoy the ride. You will arrive on the Grand Island Campus around 9:30 a.m. There will be activities to participate in as well as a chance to enjoy conversation with others who literally traveled around the world to see this marvel. A sack lunch will be provided around 11 a.m. 11:34 a.m. Partial Eclipse begins 12:58 p.m. Total Eclipse begins 1:01 p.m. Total Eclipse ends A solar eclipse is one of the many marvelous phenonmenons of the universe. Some interesting facts about the solar eclipse: • This is the first total solar eclipse in nearly four decades. • This will be the first time in 99 years that a solar eclipse will be visible from coast to coast. • The last total solar eclipse visible in Grand Island was in 1194. The next one will be in 2744. The bus will depart at approximately 2 p.m. and should arrive in Columbus at 3:30 p.m. Cost of the trip is $49 which includes convenient transportation, a sack lunch and a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Design Principles for the Regular Joe Are you responsible for creating marketing materials or social media posts for your work or club? Would you like to learn some basic principles of design to make those flyers, emails, or brochures look less homemade? The workshop will cover Robin Williams’ four basic principles of design (contrast, repetition, alignment and proximity) from her book, “The Non-Designer’s Design Book.” The use of these principles will create balance and interest while communicating your message. The last hour will explore some free design websites that can take your documents and posts to the next level. The class fee is $40, which includes Robin Williams’ book. Fused Glass Workshops Kristin Hoesing of Broken Glass Art LLC has come up with three different fused glass projects to express your creativity and decorate your home. Woodturning for Beginners The Columbus Business Center, located at the north entrance of NPPD, is excited to announce that we have a lathe available to teach the fine craft of woodturning. Duane Matson, associate dean of instruction at CCC, is the instructor. He has been creating beautiful wood pieces since high school. His work is impleccable and he is eager to share what he has learned over the years. Students must attend a two hour session on Tuesday, June 6, from 6-8 p.m. at the Columbus Business Center. Discussion will include lathe safety, tool selection, sharpening and proper techniques. GARDEN STAKES CLASS: Create something for your potted plants that will offer up exceptional beauty. Make six garden stakes for $50. You will work with COE 90 glass and you will make two from recylced glass. You can make anything from birds to flowers to ladybugs. Quilt-As-You-Go Table Runner with Cindy Wagner Learn a new sewing technique that saves time when quilting called Quilt-As-You-Go. In this process the piecing and quilting are done together. Cindy will provide all of the fabric, quilt batting and backing fabric needed for the table runner. You provide your portable sewing machine threaded with white or cream colored thread. The surface design, style and color will be up to you. Will it be a red Nebraska Husker bench by the front door? A blue-and-white folk design at the foot of your bed? A floral themed bench for your garden? Susan Schoenhofer will help you transfer your vision onto the bench. The students will prime the bench and discuss design ideas on June 8. At the first class, students will then sign up for an additional four hours of individual instruction in June with Susan to complete their bench (36” x 13” x 19”). Your Unique Design Painted Here Vintage Frames Vintage frames, chalkboards and calligraphy are high on the list of decorating trends. Patti Stuthman, abundantly creative with a magical skill in repurposing items, will help you embrace these trends. She will demonstrate how to repurpose a vintage frame into an art piece! (Example pictured) During this fun class, Patti will discuss paint options: the difference between acrylic, milk and chalk; tips on distressing and staining, and calligraphy techniques. Summer Computer Classes COMPUTER FUNDAMENTALS This six-session class will cover the absolute basics of what you need to know to make the most of your home computer. Learn how and where to save your files and how to open them back up to view or change them; how to compose a basic letter and add a few special font effects to make your documents personal using Microsoft Word software. Learn basic terminology and screen layout when using Internet Explorer software to locate various websites and how to maneuver through them. Learn the basics of an email account (how to create, view, reply, forward and delete an email) and how to manage the account using folders and a contact list. Williams has been working on an amazing project to commemorate the 150th year of statehood for Nebraska. “The Legacy of Nebraska” is an exhibit of 122 paintings done by Williams that represents all 93 counties of Nebraska. These paintings will inspire thousands of people in Nebraska and reach well beyond the state’s borders with a traveling exhibit, a Legacy of Nebraska commemorative collectors’ art book, and a documentary film produced by NET.
