Big Idea [Year 3 - ancient Egypt]

The Wow factor!
Children will be involved in a full day of Egyptian drama and history with our
very own ‘Portals to the past.’
History
Art and Design
Year Three will study Egyptian art
and hieroglyphics. They will create
their own cartouche using clay;
create a life sized model of
Tutankahmen’s mask; paint in the
style of an Egyptian; create a 3D
model of a mummy in its burial
case; and create a 3D model of
their own pyramid. They will also
design and make an Egyptian
board game from the research
they have carried out.
Geography
Discovering Egypt in North
Africa, children will investigate
the location and climate. They
will learn the significance of the
River Nile and how it was
instrumental in the development
of the ancient Egyptian
civilisation.
Who were the Egyptians? When and where did they live? Develop their understanding
chronologically of where in history this ancient civilisation took place.
They will discover what life was like in ancient Egypt, looking closely at the clothes the
ancient Egyptians wore, their jewellery and the houses they lived in.
The importance and reasons behind mummification will be explored and research into who
Tutankhamen was and the story behind Howard Carter discovering his tomb.
What significance did the ancient Egyptians have on today.
Ancient Egyptians
Year 3’s adventure this term is taking a trip back in time
to 3000 BC to the time when the ancient Egyptians lived.
They will explore this great ancient civilisation and
understand how these people thrived around the River Nile
in a land of desert. They will experience building their own
pyramids and will explore the resting places of many of the
pharaohs including the most famous of all-Tutankamen. The
children will also explore life styles and the clothing of
these incredible people, as well as their homes and daily
rituals. The process of mummification will be explored and
the job of the Canopic jars. Children will design and make
an Egyptian mummy case and the mummy that will rest
inside. Their creativity will be cultivated as re-create the
artwork of the ancient Egyptians and will create their own
collages and paintings as they experiment with textures and
look at pattern and rich colour.
Computing
They will create their own powerpoint slide which will form
part of their own multi-media presentation around the
beginnings of the ancient Egyptians.
PHSE
Compare and contrast the
powers of the different
Egyptian Gods, and discuss
the difference in our beliefs
of today.
Science
Examine and research the
process of mummification.
Music
Listen to sounds from Egypt
Design Technology and
Nutrition
Tasting traditional Egyptian
foods.
