Cornell Savoyards Musical Theatre presents Jennie’s Will A Musical History in Two Acts Learn more about our programs at sce.cornell.edu. Join us for the first show of our 2015 free events series: Princess Ida, June 23-24 at the Schwartz Center Continuing the celebration of Cornell’s sesquicentennial, the Savoyards will next stage Princess Ida, Gilbert and Sullivan’s burlesque on feminism, philanthropy, and higher education. Set in upstate New York after the Civil War, this original adaptation will investigate the political and social context of Cornell’s founding, reproduce the campus culture of regional women’s colleges such as Vassar and Wells, and honor the Seneca Falls Women’s Rights Convention. The opera’s staging will borrow theatrical elements from Gilded Age civic pageants, tableaux vivants, magic lantern shows, and lyceums. Jennie’s Will is presented in memory of Carol Jean Buckley, creator of the role of Jennie McGraw, who died of ALS at the age of 40, and Daniel Booth, originator of the role of John McGraw, taken from us too young at the age of 53, both members of the 1997 debut production. The show will be reprised on Saturday, February 28, at 8:00 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church of Dryden, 6 North Street, Dryden, NY, preceded at 7:15 by a talk by Corey Earle about Jennie McGraw’s life and the legal battle following her death.
